Can the Blue Jackets make a genuine playoff push this year?
The Columbus Blue Jackets haven't been a playoff mainstay for a long time, but with a young core, they took a step forward in 2024/25, and with a 1-1-0 record on the road through two games this season, the hope is for them to do that again in 2025/26. Unfortunately, through five games, the Blue Jackets rank in the middle of the league in goals scored per game (2.80), while also sitting 16th in goals allowed (3.00), meaning that until a major strength emerges, they may struggle to find that consistency.
In those five games, it's the Russian duo of Kirill Marchenko (6 points) and Dmitri Voronkov (5 points) that lead the way, and with six other players scoring two or more points a game as of right now, they're building great depth with this young core. Last time out for the Blue Jackets was a dramatic win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, with goals to Johnson, Marchenko and Severson leading the way as Jet Greaves continues his solid start with 22 saves on 22 shots, leading them to a statement 3-2 victory.
Expected goaltender: Elvis Merzlikins (3.54 GAA and a .920 save percentage in two appearances this season).
How far can the Stars go in 2025/26?
For two straight seasons, the Dallas Stars have made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals, and after falling short both times, they're looking to take the final leap in 2025/26 as they continue their pursuit of a Stanley Cup. Offensively, the Stars have been off to a red-hot start this year, averaging 3.60 goals per game through five outings, but with the team surprisingly struggling on the other end of the ice, they'll have plenty of time to find that balance throughout the year.
Leading the way for Dallas thus far has been their superstar core, with Mikko Rantanen's seven points leading the team alongside four different players with six points, showing just how star studded and good they can be when they find their rhythm. Last time out for the Stars was a tough loss to the St. Louis Blues, with the lone goal to Rantanen not enough to get the job done as Jake Oettinger stopped 19 of the 21 shots he saw on the night as they would end up falling in a tight one 3-1.
Expected goaltender: Jake Oettinger (2.95 GAA and a .905 save percentage in four games).
Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Dallas Stars picks
Moneyline pick for Blue Jackets vs. Stars
- Dallas -1.5 (5 units)
While Columbus has flashed plenty of potential in recent times, they've struggled to pick up on one major strength this season, and with the Stars among the best goal scoring teams in the NHL, that will help them in this matchup.
On top of that, Dallas hold a 7-3 advantage over the Blue Jackets in their last 10 head-to-head meetings, including wins in five of their last six against Columbus played at home, so while it should be hard fought, look for a Stars victory in this one.
Over/under pick for Blue Jackets vs. Stars
- Over 6 (4 units)
Last season, these teams played in two games, with a combined average of nine goals in those two, with the over also being 6-4 in their last 10 head-to-head encounters dating back to the 2020/21 campaign.
For the Blue Jackets, the over sits at 2-3 this season, with three goals a game allowed in their two road games thus far, and for the Stars, the over comes in at 4-1 in their five games, with eight goals scored in their two home games this year.
Keep it simple, take the over.
