The Columbus Blue Jackets travel to St. Paul to face the Minnesota Wild on Saturday at 8:00 PM ET from Grand Casino Arena. Columbus opened its season with a 2–1 loss in Nashville, while Minnesota cruised past St. Louis 5–0 behind a two-goal performance from Ryan Hartman. Blue line to crease — NHL picks for Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Minnesota Wild without the fluff.

Blue Jackets Look to Bounce Back After Tough Opener

Columbus fell 2–1 to Nashville in its opener despite outshooting the Predators 38–31. Dmitri Voronkov scored the team’s lone goal, tipping in a shot late in the first period, but a disallowed goal in the second period and a power-play tally from Ryan O’Reilly in the third doomed the Blue Jackets’ chances. Goaltender Jet Greaves stood up to pressure, stopping 29 of 31 shots for a .935 save percentage and a 2.04 goals-against average.

The Blue Jackets played well despite the loss. The Blue Jackets’ 38 shots on goal displayed a solid attack, and they committed just 10 penalty minutes. However, Columbus went 0-for-3 on the power play and allowed a goal on the penalty kill. Forward Damon Severson picked up an assist, and Voronkov led the team with two shots and one goal.

Defensively, the Jackets allowed just two goals and 31 shots against, a modest improvement over last season’s averages. The pairing of Severson and Zach Werenski looked solid in the back, and the young talent continues to learn the defensive schemes. With Greaves performing well in net, Columbus has a solid chance at winning, but the offense must convert chances, especially on the man advantage.

Injuries: Columbus does not report any injuries.

Wild Riding Momentum After Statement Win

Minnesota opened its season with a convincing 5–0 shutout of St. Louis. Ryan Hartman scored twice, while Matt Boldy, Joel Eriksson Ek, and Marco Rossi each added goals. Kirill Kaprizov had three assists, and Filip Gustavsson stopped all 27 shots for his 12th career shutout. The Wild dominated both ends of the ice, converting one of three power plays and killing off all penalties.

The Boldy Eriksson Ek, Kaprizov line combined for seven points, showing strong puck movement while controlling play on attack. Minnesota finished with just 21 shots on goal, but was able to convert at a high rate of nearly 24% of its attempts. The power play was 33.3%, while the penalty kill was perfect at 100%.

Defensively, Gustavsson was flawless, and the blue line, led by Jared Spurgeon and Jake Middleton, limited St. Louis’ open looks at the goal. Minnesota’s handling of the puck was outstanding, showing that the Wild look to be in mid-season form. With a strong group on attack and one of the league’s most reliable goalies, the Wild could improve from last season’s 45 wins.

Injuries: Nico Sturm (C) is on injured reserve until late November. Jonas Brodin (D) is expected to return on October 11. Cameron Butler, Michael Milne, and Stevie Leskovar are on short-term IR.

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Minnesota Wild Pick

Spread Pick for Blue Jackets vs. Wild

  •  Minnesota Wild -1.5 (4 Units)

Minnesota looks like the better team after a dominant 5–0 win over St. Louis, and the matchup lines up well against a Columbus team that struggled to convert in a 2–1 loss to Nashville. The Wild’s top line of Hartman, Boldy, and Kaprizov combined for seven points and controlled play effectively, while Filip Gustavsson posted a perfect 1.000 save percentage. Columbus fired 38 shots in its opener but lacked scoring touch and went 0-for-3 on the power play, which will be a big problem against Minnesota’s disciplined defense and 100% penalty kill. With the Wild holding a strong home record from last season and playing with early-season confidence, they will cover the puck line behind Gustavsson’s play in goal and a potent attack group that has started the season strong.

Over/Under Pick for Blue Jackets vs. Wild

  • Under 6.0 (4 Units)

The Under looks appealing with both teams coming off low-scoring games that displayed defense and goaltending. Columbus scored just one goal in its opener despite putting several shots on goal, while Minnesota’s defense completely smothered St. Louis and Gustavsson didn’t allow a single puck past him. The Blue Jackets’ even-strength defense performed well, and neither team has shown the kind of pace that typically produces more than a combined six goals. With both clubs playing solid hockey and strong in net, this matchup will produce at most five goals, but is much more likely just 3 or 4.
