Stars can't keep streak intact
The Stars attempt at running the table was halted after only three games. In the team’s first loss of the season on Thursday night, they blew an early, two-goal lead and scored just one goal over the last two periods. Dallas got 31 shots on goal in the loss, while the defense allowed 26.
Through four games, they’ve been second in the league in scoring, averaging 4.25 goals per game. They’ve also averaged 28.8 shots per game and are fourth in the league with five power play tallies, two of them in Thursday’s loss. Wyatt Johnson has scored one goal in each game thus far and leads the team with four scores. Roope Hintz and Thomas Harley are both tied for 10th in the league with five assists apiece. That duo, along with Mikko Rantanen, lead the team with six points each.
Defensively, Dallas is giving up 3.75 goals per game, tied for the eighth-highest mark in the NHL. Opponents have 32.8 shots per game against them as well, fourth most in the league. The Stars are 28th in the league with 74 hits and they’ve been called for the fifth most penalties, 58. On the penalty kill, they’ve allowed five goals on 16 chances. Casey DeSmith saw his first action of the season on Thursday, so this will be a Jake Oettinger game in net. Oettinger has a 3.24 goals against average in three starts. Miro Heiskanen is averaging a team-high 25:20 TOI and has two assists and a +1 to show for it.

Blues battered in latest effort
The Blues had themselves a cozy little two-game winning streak before Chicago ended it in a big way. They allowed a combined nine goals in their first three games, then eight on Wednesday night, allowing at least two a period. St. Louis had 26 shots on the night, and the Blackhawks had 29.
St. Louis is one of four clubs averaging 3.00 goals per game, tying them for 17th in the league. With 29 shots per game, they rank 12th, and with the extra man, they’ve notched two power play goals in 11 chances. Eight different players scored for the team, but only two have multiple goals thus far. Jake Neighbours had a goal and an assist in Wednesday’s loss, and he leads the club with four goals and five assists. Jimmy Snuggerud and Pavel Buchnevich each have three points.
Following the eight goals allowed on Wednesday, they are now allowing 4.25 goals per game, the third-highest mark in the NHL. Opponents average 29 shots per game against them, 12th overall. They haven’t been afraid of contact, making 119 hits, eighth most in the league. They’ve also blocked 61 shots while on the penalty kill; they’ve allowed three goals. Jordan Binnington has a 3.63 goals against average and should be back between the pipes after coming on for 12 minutes in Wednesday’s blowout loss. He made six of seven saves in the loss. Justin Faulk is leading the team in ice time, 23:30 per game, and has an assist and a +2.

Stars vs. Blues Picks
Spread Pick for Stars vs. Blues
- Stars -140 (5 units)
The Stars swept the three-game season series between these two teams last season. They’ve been the better team to this point, and the Blues have to be reeling following their most recent loss. Dallas is doing a great job at working the puck, as 12 different players have found the back of the net for the team already. That will put a lot of pressure on an already down-and-out St. Louis defense, which is still without one of its top blue liners in Torey Krug. The Stars will have Oettinger, who is 3-0-0 this season, back between the pipes. The visitors do have some issues staying out of the penalty box, but they should be okay if they can limit the violations. The Stars are 8-2 in their last 10 games against the Blues.
Grab Dallas in this one.
Over/Under Pick for Stars vs. Blues
- Over 5.5 (5 units)
This matchup features one of the top-scoring offenses in the league going up against one of the worst defenses. The Stars scored five goals in each of their first three games, then three in their loss. If they can duplicate any of those efforts, we have ourselves a very solid foundation. I would expect them to really get rolling against a soft St. Louis defense. Dallas might be even softer when it comes to being physical, so I would expect the Blues to be able to get things set up, especially if they can get a man advantage at any point. After getting shut out in their season opener, St. Louis averaged four goals per game in their last three. Between the two teams, the over is 7-1 this season.
Take the over.
