The Dallas Stars visit the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, November 3, at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET. Dallas has been getting the job done with defense, while Washington has been winning games with a much more productive offense. This is one of those matchups where you can make a pretty good argument for either team, and the early market has them priced close together. Check out our free NHL picks for more hockey predictions.
Dallas Is Making Teams Work for Everything
Dallas comes into Tuesday at 8-5-1, including a 3-1-1 road record. The Stars have won three of their last five games, but what really stands out is how difficult they’ve been to score against. They’re allowing just 2.2 goals per game, and opponents are getting only about 22.3 shots on net.
That’s impressive stuff. You don’t have to score four or five goals every night when you’re making the other team work that hard just to get a decent shot. Dallas is also giving up very little on opposing power plays, which takes away another way teams usually find offense.
The concern is scoring. The Stars are averaging only 2.7 goals per game, and that doesn’t leave much room for mistakes. If Washington gets an early lead, Dallas might have to play a more aggressive game than it wants. That’s when things can get interesting, because the Stars are at their best when they control the pace rather than chase the scoreboard.
Washington Has Been Tough at Home
Washington is 8-4-0 and has won six of its first eight home games. The Capitals have also won four of their last five, averaging 3.8 goals during that stretch. That’s pretty good hockey, and they’re scoring 3.6 goals per game for the season.
What I like about Washington is that it doesn’t need a perfect game defensively to win. The Capitals are allowing 3.1 goals per game, so there are some holes back there, but they’re finding enough offense to make up for it. They’ve been especially productive at home, where they’re averaging close to four goals a game.
Here’s the catch. Dallas isn’t going to give Washington the same kind of shooting opportunities that most teams do. The Stars have been excellent at limiting shots, and that could force the Capitals to work harder for every goal. Washington needs to avoid getting impatient and turning this into the kind of tight defensive game Dallas prefers.
Dallas Stars vs Washington Capitals Picks and Prediction
Moneyline Pick: Dallas Stars
I’m taking Dallas in what should be a close one. Washington has the home record and the better scoring average, so I understand why somebody would want the Capitals. But I keep coming back to how well Dallas has defended. Allowing just 2.2 goals per game while keeping opponents around 22 shots is a pretty good recipe for winning on the road. The Stars have also been solid away from home. I think Dallas can frustrate Washington enough to steal this one, especially if the Capitals start forcing shots instead of waiting for good opportunities.
Total Pick: Under 6.5 Goals
I like the under 6.5 more than I like either side here. Dallas doesn’t play the kind of hockey that usually turns into a wide-open scoring contest, and the Stars aren’t putting up huge offensive numbers themselves. Washington can score, no question, but getting four goals against this Dallas defense is a much tougher assignment than usual. Something like a 3-2 game wouldn’t surprise me. The obvious danger is Washington getting its offense rolling early, but I’m betting Dallas can keep the pace under control.
Final Picks: Dallas Stars Moneyline | Under 6.5 Goals
