The Edmonton Oilers hit the road to face the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, with the opening faceoff at 7:00 PM ET on ESPN+. Edmonton enters the matchup 1-0-1 after earning a 3-1 win over Vancouver, while the Rangers return home at 2-2-0 following a 1-0 loss to Washington. Blue line to crease — NHL picks for Edmonton Oilers at New York Rangers without the fluff.

Oilers Earn First Win of the Season

The Oilers got in the win column Saturday with a 3-1 victory over the Canucks. Noah Philp and Andrew Mangiapane each scored in the second period, and Leon Draisaitl sealed it late with an empty-net goal. Calvin Pickard was steady in net, turning aside 14 of 15 shots for his first win of the season. Through two games, Edmonton has averaged 36 shots per game while allowing just 18.5.

Leon Draisaitl leads the team with three points (two goals, one assist), while Connor McDavid continues to be the playmaker, leading with three assists and a +2 rating. Edmonton’s power play has converted at a 22.2% clip, and the penalty kill has been solid, holding opponents scoreless 83.3% of the time when short-handed.

Between the pipes, both goaltenders have seen action. Pickard owns a 1.00 goals against average and .933 save percentage, while Stuart Skinner has a 2.77 GAA and .864 SV% through one start. Expect Pickard to get another look, given his recent success against Vancouver.

Injury Report: Jake Walman (D) remains on IR until Oct. 16, Zach Hyman (LW) is on long-term IR until early November, and Mattias Janmark (C) is expected back this week.

Rangers Look to Regain Offensive Spark

After back-to-back road wins, the Rangers fell flat in a 1-0 home loss to Washington. Despite outshooting the Capitals 35-21, New York couldn’t solve Charlie Lindgren, who posted a shutout. Adam Fox has been the bright spot offensively, tallying four points (three goals, one assist) to lead the team, while defenseman Sam Carrick has three assists and a +4 rating.

Goaltender Igor Shesterkin remains the key to success for the Rangers, starting three of four games with a 0.67 GAA and a .976 SV%. His lone shutout came in Buffalo, and he’s expected to start against Edmonton. Backup Jonathan Quick allowed one goal on 21 shots against Washington in his only outing thus far.

The Rangers have been strong defensively, allowing just 1.25 goals per game while posting a perfect 100% penalty kill. However, the power play is at just 18.2%, which is below expectations given the talent on the roster. The Rangers are attempting to work through early-season injuries, using outstanding goaltending to offset an early lack of offense.

Injury Report: Vincent Trocheck (C) is sidelined until Oct. 23 with an upper-body injury, while defensemen Carson Soucy (IR, Oct. 20) and Brandon Scanlin (OUT, Oct. 17) are also unavailable.

Edmonton Oilers at New York Rangers Pick

Spread Pick for Oilers vs. Rangers

  • New York Rangers -1.5 (+ Units: 4)

The Rangers’ goaltending and home-ice advantage make them the team to take in this game. Igor Shesterkin has been nearly unbeatable, allowing just two goals in three starts and stopping over 97% of shots faced. The Oilers are strong on attack with stars McDavid and Draisaitl, but are missing Zach Hyman, which hurts the second and third lines, especially against a blue line and goalie that the Rangers have. Edmonton’s play on the road is untested, and while the Oilers’ power play can take advantage of mistakes, New York’s penalty kill has been flawless. Expect the Rangers to rebound from the 1-0 loss behind their home crowd, controlling possession and tempo, with forechecking and strong play at the blue line. With Shesterkin in the net and Fox pushing the attack, New York should cover the puck line in the win.

Over/Under Pick for Oilers vs. Rangers

  • Under 5.5 (5 Units)

Both teams have been sharp defensively early in the season, with New York allowing just five total goals in four games and Edmonton giving up only four in two. Goaltending will dictate the outcome, with Shesterkin likely facing Pickard; goals will come at a premium. The Oilers’ offense is averaging 3.00 goals per game but relies heavily on its top line. Without Hyman and with Janmark only just returning, second and third line scoring remains inconsistent. The Rangers, meanwhile, have been held to two goals or fewer in three of four games. Combine that with New York’s perfect penalty kill and Edmonton’s PK above 80%, and this should be a low-scoring battle. Expect both sides to have chances to score, but struggle against two talented goalies.
