Western Conference foes meet for a Saturday afternoon tilt, so strap in and check out our Kings vs. Jets picks before the puck drops on this one. Los Angeles (1-1, 2 pts.) picked up a 6-5 shutout win over Vegas on Wednesday in their first road game of the season. Winnipeg (0-1, 0 pts.) fell 5-4 against Dallas at home on Thursday night. This game is scheduled for 1:30 EST from the Canada Life Center and remember, nobody does it better when it comes to NHL picks!

Kings split first two

It took quite a bit of effort for the Kings to pull off their first win of the season, but they were able to do that on Wednesday night against a strong Vegas team. They trailed by two with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation before scoring two goals in the span of three minutes to tie the game and send it to overtime.

All five of the Kings' goals on Wednesday came off the sticks of different players, as did their lone goal in the season opener. Kevin Fiala, Andrea Kuzmenko and Quinton Byfield each have a goal and an assist. Anze Kopitar has added two helpers to the effort. Through two games, Los Angeles has been able to take 25.5 shots on goal per game. They’ve gone 2-for-5 on the power play and have had one short-hander, Trevor Moore’s late in the third on Wednesday.

The Kings have used both of their goalies through two games. Anton Forsberg picked up the win over Vegas after stopping 30 shots. He came up with two big stops in the shutout to help secure victory. The two Los Angeles netminders have an .845 save percentage and have allowed a total of nine goals. Defenseman Brian Dumoulin, who is third on the team with a 19:50 average time on ice per game, has a +/- of -4, along with pair mate Cody Ceci. Drew Doughty is logging the most ice time for the blue liners, putting in 24:14 per game thus far, logging an assist in the process.

Jets run out of time

The Jets came out with some gusto in their season opener on Thursday, but in the midst of a furious third period, they ran out of steam in their comeback attempt. Three minutes into the third period, they found themselves down, 5-1, and mounted a late comeback which started around the 10-minute mark and included two short-handed goals.

Kyle Connor, who signed an eight-year, $96 million contract extension right before the season began, notched a hat trick in the opener, with two goals coming over the final nine minutes of play. It was the seventh hat trick of his career. Linemate Mark Schiefele contributed an assist on all three of those goals. The team got 25 shots on goal in the loss, went 0-for-4 on the power play, but did manage to get those two shorthanded goals, giving them the NHL lead. The Jets committed seven penalties against the Stars.

On the defensive side, they allowed 37 shots on goal, of which Connor Hellebuyck stopped 32 of, including 10 saves on the power play. Josh Morrisey was the only defenseman to finish in the positive with his +/- at +2 and he logged a game-high 27:04 on the ice. Winnipeg won the hits battle against Dallas, 33-21, and they blocked eight shots on the night.

Kings vs. Jets Picks

Spread Pick for Kings vs. Jets

  • Jets -125 (4 units)

Both teams opened their season with a loss, and while Los Angeles has already had the chance to make up for it, this will be the first time Winnipeg can. Given the fact that they are still at home for this one should help. They’ve yet to leave the comforts of their own beds, which is always a nice plus. The Kings, on the other hand, have already hit the road and their first game away from home, though it was a win, surely took a bit out of them. They will have had time to recoup, but also needed to do a little international travel in the interim. Winnipeg’s offense, once it got going in the third period, looked explosive. Back-to-back short-handed goals is another strong sign that they are doing things right at least. However, their X-factor in this game is Hellebuyck, who is now aptly warmed up after seeing a swarm of 37 shots on Thursday.

Take the Jets.

Over/Under Pick for Kings vs. Jets

  • Under 5.5 (5 units)

While this seems like a clear number given what each team in their most recent games, things tend to get a bit tight when these two meet. Last season, they averaged a combined 4.3 goals in their three meetings. The Kings scored just one goal in their season opener and had to score a couple in the third period to push for their first win. Winnipeg’s defense, and more importantly, their goalie situation, is going to be an issue for Los Angeles’ offense. The Jets were zooming in the third on Thursday night, but like the Kings, it took a major effort to even put themselves back into that game. The under is 5-2 in the last seven games between these teams and with it still being early in the season, I expect another tight, low scorer between these two.

Take the under.
