The Devils will host the Wild on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. EST in the Prudential Center. Check out our Minnesota Wild vs New Jersey Devils pick and prediction here!

While it is still early in the season, the Wild are 5th in the Atlantic Division with seven points in seven games. They are still only four points behind the Avalanche for the top spot in the division, though. They are 1-1 at home and 2-2-1 on the road thus far as well. Meanwhile, the Devils are 2nd in the Metro division, obtaining eight points in the first five games of the season. They are 2-0 at home this season and 2-1 on the road. Interestingly, the Devils are riding a four-game winning streak heading into this contest. New Jersey is favored at a -130 money line while the total is set at 5.5 goals. Can the Devils improve their winning streak to five games with a home win? Don't sit in the penalty box this season? Check our winning free NHL picks!

Wild Wishing Well

Minnesota won their most recent contest, defeating the New York Rangers by a score of 3-1. Kirill Kaprizov, Jonas Brodin, and Danila Yurov each scored for the Wild and the former led the team with six shots on goal. Nobody had more than one point for Minnesota and Filip Gustavsson made 23 of 24 saves in the victory.

Minnesota's offense ranks 23rd in goals per game, #1 on the power play, 12th in shots per game, and 21st in the face-off circle. Brad Kaprizov leads most categories with ten points, five goals, three assists, four power-play goals, and 28 shots on goal. Matt Boldy has the most assists with six and Vladimir Tarasenko has the most assists on the power play with four. Marcus Foligno has an offense-high nine penalty minutes, and Marcus Johansson is the only offensive player with a positive +/- ratio. Boldy barely edges out Kaprizov in average ice time as well. Bogosian, Zuccarello, and Nico Sturm are all out for this upcoming contest.

Zeev Buium leads the defense with five points, including a goal and four assists. Zach Bogosian has a +3 to lead the unit and Jake Middleton has a defense-high 15 penalty minutes. Brock Faber is the leader in average ice time for the Wild with an average of over 23 minutes. All of Buium's points have come from the power play, effectively making him the leader on the blue line in power-play points. Faber leads the defense in shots with 13 though. Gustavsson is the primary goaltender for the Wild with a 3.04 GAA and an 89.9% save percentage. His backup in Jesper Wallstedt has provided a nice compliment with a 2.35 GAA and a 90.9% save percentage in two games. The Wild are currently 22nd in goals against, 26th on the penalty kill, and 23rd in shots against per game.

Devils Dealing

New Jersey took down the defending Western Conference champion Oilers by a score of 5-3 in their latest contest. Jack Hughes is back with two goals and an assist to lead the team, while Jesper Bratt had two points and Nico Hischier had two assists in the victory. The former and the latter each had a team-high four shots on goal, while Jake Allen made 27 of 30 saves in goal.

The Devils have started better than they performed last year, ranking 4th in goals per game, 18th in shots per game, 26th in the face-off circle, and 7th on the power play. Bratt leads the unit with seven points, three goals, and four assists. He also has the most penalty minutes among offensive skaters with six. Dawson Mercer has the best +/- ratio with a +5, and Jack Hughes has the most time on the ice with an average of 20:21. Four different players have scored on the power play for New Jersey, while Bratt and Hughes each have a team-high two power play assists. Overall, Hughes has the most shots with 20, but I imagine it will be a fierce battle to the end between Hughes and Bratt. Eight players are listed on New Jersey's injury report, most notably Stefan Noesen and Jacob Markstrom. Noesen is considered day-to-day at this point, while the rest of the players on the list are out for this upcoming matchup.

On the defensive side, Luke Hughes leads most categories with four points, four assists, a +2 ratio, eight penalty minutes, and 10 total shots on the season. Dougie Hamilton is the only defender for New Jersey to score thus far, and Brett Pesce has the most time on the ice with an average of 21:10. Nobody has earned a point on the power play for the blue-liners, but I expect that to change soon. Jacob Markstrom and Jake Allen have split time in net so far in the season, and Allen has the better numbers with a 1.88 GAA and a 93.4% save percentage. Allen should continue to get more reps, especially with Markstrom listed as injured. New Jersey is currently ranked 16th in goals against per game, 3rd on the penalty kill, and 14th in shots against.

Wild vs Devils Pick

Spread Pick for Wild vs Devils

  • New Jersey Devils Money Line (4 units)

There's no way I'm going against the Devils at home, especially with their win streak on the line right here. New Jersey has taken the last four meetings against Minnesota, and the Wild have scored seven goals in the past four games combined. The fact that most of those goals have come from the power play is even more concerning, especially since New Jersey is currently one of the top penalty-killing units in the league. Hughes and Bratt continue to excel and while Kaprizov is a fantastic talent, he cannot carry a game by himself.

Over/Under pick for Panthers vs Bruins

  • Under 5.5 (4 units)

This is purely based on instinct, as the Devils rely more on their defense than anything else to help them win games. They have let in three goals or less in their last four games in a row, and I don't trust the Wild to score more than two here. New Jersey is 4th in goals per game and 18th in shots, which suggests a regression is bound to happen, considering the ratio between the two. I expect this to be a closer game than people think with Gustavsson keeping the Wild alive as long as possible and New Jersey's defense clamping down on Kaprizov and co. Minnesota has failed to hit the over in their last three games as well.
