Montreal Canadiens Are Finding Ways to Win on the Road
Six goals across two games isn't a huge offensive haul, but Montreal will gladly take the four points. The Canadiens beat Chicago 4-1 on Friday before getting past Winnipeg 2-1 on Sunday. Both opponents had trouble finding a way through Montreal's defense. Things were quite different in the two games before that. Buffalo and San Jose each scored three against the Canadiens in overtime contests, with Montreal winning one and losing the other. The Canadiens have now taken three of their last four games, despite a power play that has scored only four times in 11 outings. They've been much better when killing penalties, with an 82.6% success rate.
There are a few players St. Louis will need to watch closely, starting with Cole Caufield. He's scored six goals on 36 shots, more than any other Canadiens player. Lane Hutson has 10 points from the blue line, with seven coming from assists, while Juraj Slafkovsky has eight points. Nick Suzuki would normally be a major part of the offense, having collected 12 points in nine games, but he's out. In goal, Jacob Fowler has been excellent, winning five of six decisions. His 1.79 GAA ranks seventh in the NHL, and he's stopped 92.4% of the shots he's faced. Jakub Dobes has had a harder time, going 1-2-2 with a 4.47 GAA.
Injuries: Nick Suzuki, Sam Montembeault, Ivan Demidov, Bryce Pickford and Lucas Condotta are out.
St. Louis Blues Looking for More Consistent Scoring
What a difference two days made for St. Louis. On Thursday, the Blues scored six against Vegas and won comfortably, 6-2. By Saturday, they couldn't get a goal against Carolina and lost 4-0 at home. That has been the story of their recent games. St. Louis squeezed out a 2-1 win over Winnipeg on October 20, but the two games before that ended in defeats to Nashville and Minnesota. The Blues have 35 goals in 11 games, so the offense is there. Getting it going regularly has been the issue. Their power play has produced seven goals, with a 24.1% conversion rate.
Mason McTavish has given the Blues a dependable scoring option. He's put six of his 31 shots in the net, and three of those goals have been game-winners. McTavish has 10 points, the same total as Dylan Holloway, who has three goals and seven assists. Jimmy Snuggerud is another player to watch with six goals through 11 appearances. Connor McMichael has seven points, and Robert Thomas has six. In net, Joel Hofer has four wins, a 2.40 GAA and .917 save percentage. Jordan Binnington's numbers aren't nearly as good. He's 1-2-0 with a 4.68 GAA and .831 save percentage.
Injuries: Ross Johnston, Torey Krug, Dillon Dube, Alexey Toropchenko and Tyler Tucker are out.
Key To The Game
Montreal has been keeping scoring chances under control recently, while St. Louis is trying to rediscover its offense after Saturday's shutout. Suzuki's absence matters, but Fowler's recent work in goal gives the Canadiens a strong chance on the road.
Montreal Canadiens vs St. Louis Blues Game Pick
- Montreal Canadiens
Montreal has played good defensive hockey on this road trip, and Fowler has been a major part of that success. The Canadiens allowed one goal in Chicago and another in Winnipeg. St. Louis has dangerous shooters, but Saturday's shutout against Carolina raises questions about its offense. Even without Suzuki, Montreal has Caufield and Hutson producing chances. The Canadiens finish this trip with another win, play the moneyline in St. Louis.
Montreal Canadiens vs St. Louis Blues Over/Under Pick
- Under
Montreal's two weekend victories finished with five and three total goals, while St. Louis was shut out Saturday. Fowler has kept opposing teams quiet, and Hofer gives the Blues a solid option in goal with a 2.40 GAA. St. Louis has enough scoring threats to cause problems, but losing Suzuki limits Montreal's attack. Another close game looks more likely than a scoring contest, making the under the pick on Tuesday night.
