New Jersey earned their most humiliating loss of the season, falling to the Colorado Avalanche by a score of 8-4. Jack Hughes was the only player with multiple points on the day, scoring a goal and providing an assist. Dawson Mercer, Stefan Noesen, and Dougie Hamilton also scored for the Devils. Nico Hischier had an assist and led the team with five shots on goal, while Jacob Markstrom made 34 of 42 saves in the effort.
The Devils have started better than they performed last year, ranking 1st in goals per game, 12th in shots per game, 25th in the face-off circle, and 5th on the power play. Hughes leads the unit with 14 points, nine goals, and 38 shots. Jesper Bratt has the most assists with eight and Mercer has a team-high +8. Three different forwards have six penalty minutes to their names and Hischier barely edges out Hughes in ice time with an average of 20:13. None of the offensive skaters have scored more than one goal on the power play, while Hughes and Hischier each have three power play assists on the year. Seven players are listed on New Jersey's injury report, most notably Cody Glassn and Jacob Markstrom. All are listed as out for this upcoming matchup.
On the defensive side, Simon Nemec has the most points with seven, all assists. Dougie Hamilton has four goals to his name to lead the defense, and Hughes has a +5. San Jose Still Stinks
The Sharks most recently lost to the Kings by a score of 4-3. Will Smith, Alex Wennberg, and Philipp Kurashev each scored for San Jose and the latter two also had an assist each in the effort. Michael Misa had an eye-opening eight shots on the day, while Yaroslav Askarov made only 10 of 14 saves in the effort.
The Sharks are currently ranked 17th in goals per game, 26th in shots per game, 16th in the face-off circle, and 10th on the power play. Celebrini leads the Sharks with six goals and ten assists, but Williams Eklund barely has the highest number of shots per game with 29. Kurashev is the only forward with a positive +/- ratio, and Ryan Reaves has ten penalty minutes to his name. Celebrini is the only offensive skater to average more than 20.5 minutes of ice time per game, and he has a team-high two power-play goals. He is also tied for the lead in power-play assists with four.
On the defensive side, Dmitry Orlov is the most productive one with eight points (all assists) and 14 shots. John Klingberg and Mario Ferraro each have a goal to their name, and Orlov has a team-high +2. Vincent Desharnais has 16 penalty minutes on the season, and Orlov has averaged over 23 minutes of ice time per game thus far. Klingberg is the only defender to score on the power play this season, and Orlov has four power-play assists. In net, the combination of Alex Nedeljkovic and Akarov has teamed up to split duties. They each have played in four games, but the former has the better numbers with a 4.00 GAA and an 87.5% save percentage. Overall, the Sharks rank dead last in goals against per game, 28th on the penalty kill, and 29th in shots against per game. Nick Leddy and one other defender are day-to-day, and Adam Gaudette is out for this contest.
Devils vs Sharks Pick
Spread Pick for Devils vs Sharks
- New Jersey Devils -1.5 (4 units)
Simply put, the numbers don't lie in this one. When you put the top-scoring offense against a subpar defense, both on the power play and with 5 v 5, good things happen for the high-scoring team. Both goalies for San Jose have at least a 4.00 GAA and an 87.5% save percentage at best. New Jersey has won eight of their last nine games played overall, and San Jose has lost their last eight of ten games. While being at home might make it a bit easier for San Jose to score and hold the New Jersey offense, the level of talent between the two teams is apparent. I'm rolling with one of the best teams in hockey right now to cover.
Over/Under pick for Devils vs Sharks
- Over 6.5 (4 units)
San Jose has hit the over in four of their last five games played, and they've given up 4+ goals in three of their last four games. Considering that they will be facing the top-scoring offense in the league right now, I'd say 4-5 goals should be expected for the Devils. New Jersey has been a bit loose on the defensive end, giving up a combined 11 goals in their last two games as well. San Jose to their credit, has scored 3+ goals in four of their last five games. Both teams have hit the over in the majority of their contests this season, and these two teams should find a way to score a lot.
