Islanders Look to Rebound After Shootout Loss
New York has alternated wins and losses over its last five outings, but the offense is there. The Islanders have scored 3.75 goals per game (4th) while firing nearly 30 shots per night. Bo Horvat leads the club with 9 points (5 goals, 4 assists), continuing to lead the top line. Anders Lee’s 6 assists and a +3 rating have helped set up New York scoring, and Anthony Duclair has chipped in with timely goals. New York’s special teams have been respectable, converting 18.5 percent of power plays while generating two shorthanded goals through eight games.
Defensively, though, the Islanders have struggled. Ilya Sorokin has started six games and has a 3.70 goals-against average and a .875 save percentage, a far cry from his usual numbers. Backup David Rittich has been better, posting a 2.01 GAA and .940 save rate in limited work. The Islanders are surrendering 3.38 goals per game, and the penalty kill sits at 74.1 percent—well below average at 22nd in the league. That weakness showed in the 4-3 shootout loss to Philadelphia, where New York allowed two power-play goals and could not shut down the Flyers late, despite leading in the third period.
The Islanders’ injury list is long. Maxim Shabanov is day-to-day, while Pierre Engvall, Alexander Romanov, and goaltender Semyon Varlamov are all sidelined on injured reserve. Forward Jesse Nurmi also remains unavailable, which leaves the defensive pairings stretched thin.

Bruins Snap Skid, Look for Back-to-Back Wins
Boston finally got relief with Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Avalanche, halting a six-game losing streak. Morgan Geekie was the hero, scoring his sixth goal of the season with under five seconds left in the second period. His early-season scoring touch has been one of Boston’s few constants, as he now leads the club in goals. David Pastrnak continues to pace the offense overall with 13 points (5 goals, 8 assists), while Viktor Arvidsson and Michael Eyssimont each scored in the victory as well.
Despite the win, the Bruins still average just 3.2 goals per game and allow 3.7 (26yh), a slight negative differential that is due to below-average play at both ends. The special teams have been solid with the power play at 19.4 percent, while the penalty kill has been excellent at 87.2 percent. The penalty kill was a factor against Colorado, where they killed off multiple chances and limited the Avalanche’s open looks. Jeremy Swayman continues to be the No. 1 goalie with a .910 save percentage and 2.85 GAA, while Joonas Korpisalo has struggled early with a 4.03 GAA and .845 save percentage.
Boston’s blue line remains shorthanded. Hampus Lindholm and Jordan Harris are both out, which limits experience on the back end. Still, the Bruins’ home form has been solid at 3-3-0, and Saturday’s result may give them momentum.
New York Islanders at Boston Bruins Pick
Spread Pick for Islanders vs. Bruins
- Boston Bruins -1.5 (4 Units)
The Bruins finally rediscovered their defense against Colorado, limiting the Avalanche to just two goals. That defensive response, together with a home-ice advantage and stronger goaltending, gives Boston the edge. The Islanders have struggled to protect leads, allowing at least three goals in five of their last six. The Islanders’ penalty kill has been unreliable, which could spell trouble against a Bruins power play near 20 percent. Boston’s puck control and Swayman’s play between the pipes are more reasons to take the Bruins. Expect the Bruins to cover the puckline on Tuesday.
Over/Under Pick for Islanders vs. Bruins
- Over 6.5 (5 Units)
Both teams have shown more offensive punch than defensive strength. The Islanders’ 3.75 goals per game and the Bruins’ 3.2 imply that scoring will be consistent, while both sides have goaltenders facing plenty of shots on goal. New York’s defensive lapses and 74 percent penalty kill invite problems against Boston’s special teams. The Bruins, meanwhile, have conceded at least three goals in seven of 10 games. With Pastrnak, Horvat, and Geekie all performing well, this matchup will finish over the closing line.
