NHL Picks for October 2, 2026
Friday's NHL schedule features five games, with several teams making their season debuts and the New York Rangers already facing their first back-to-back of the year. Early-season betting requires extra attention to roster changes, injuries and goaltending because familiar team names can hide substantially different lineups. The best opportunities on this card come from two plus-money sides and three totals where the market offers a better price than laying heavy juice with a favorite.
New York Rangers vs Detroit Red Wings Pick
The Rangers arrive in Detroit after splitting their first two games. New York was shut out 3-0 in Boston before responding with a 5-1 win at Tampa Bay on Thursday. The quick turnaround is the concern, especially because Igor Shesterkin started against the Lightning. Dylan Garand is expected to get the Friday assignment with Joonas Korpisalo sidelined by a lower-body injury.
Detroit has the rest advantage and John Gibson available in goal, but the Red Wings open the season without Dylan Larkin. Losing their captain and one of their primary transition threats puts additional pressure on Alex DeBrincat, Lucas Raymond and the rest of the forward group. New York still has proven offensive creators in Mika Zibanejad, J.T. Miller and Alexis Lafreniere, with Adam Fox capable of driving offense from the blue line.
The back-to-back and goalie change keep this from being a comfortable Rangers selection, but the plus-money price compensates for those concerns. New York already has two regular-season games behind it, while Detroit is integrating lineup changes without Larkin. If the Rangers can protect Garand early and avoid allowing Detroit to dictate the first period, their offensive depth gives them a strong chance to steal the road game.
Pick: New York Rangers moneyline at +105 or better.
Washington Capitals vs Carolina Hurricanes Pick
Carolina is trying to rebound from a 1-0 overtime loss to Florida in its opener. The Hurricanes controlled significant stretches of that game but could not solve the Panthers before Gustav Forsling scored the winner late in overtime. That result reinforces Carolina's ability to dictate possession without necessarily producing a high-scoring game.
Washington is making its season debut and has enough finishing talent to punish mistakes. Alex Ovechkin remains the focal point, while Dylan Strome, Tom Wilson, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Aliaksei Protas give the Capitals several ways to generate offense. Washington's bigger challenge is preventing Carolina's forecheck from creating extended defensive-zone shifts.
Logan Thompson gives the Capitals a chance to survive periods in which Carolina owns more of the puck. Washington's best route to an upset is to keep the score manageable, protect the middle of the ice and force the Hurricanes to finish through traffic. Carolina has no reason to turn this into a track meet either. With a total of 6.5, there is enough room for a 3-2 or 4-2 game to stay under.
Pick: Under 6.5 goals at -135 or better.
Boston Bruins vs Winnipeg Jets Pick
Boston opened with an encouraging 3-0 victory over the Rangers and now gets an immediate test in Winnipeg. One of the most important early developments was the impact of JJ Peterka, who joined Boston from Utah during the offseason. Peterka scored in his Bruins debut and adds speed and finishing ability alongside a forward group already built around David Pastrnak.
Winnipeg's season begins without Connor Hellebuyck. The longtime Jets star did not report to training camp, requested a trade and is unavailable, leaving Stuart Skinner to take over in goal. Winnipeg still has dangerous scorers in Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor, so Hellebuyck's absence does not make the Jets an easy opponent. It does, however, remove one of the largest advantages Winnipeg traditionally carries into home games.
Boston enters with actual regular-season rhythm and a top group that looked dangerous immediately. The Bruins need to pressure Skinner rather than allowing him to settle comfortably into his new crease. At roughly even money or a small plus price, Boston offers better value than asking Winnipeg to justify favorite status while adjusting to a major change in goal.
Pick: Boston Bruins moneyline at +105 or better.
St. Louis Blues vs Dallas Stars Pick
St. Louis and Dallas both make their season debuts in a matchup that sets up as one of the more structured games on Friday's schedule. Dallas has the deeper lineup and deserves to be favored, but the Stars do not need a high-event game to establish that advantage. Jake Oettinger gives Dallas the kind of goaltending that allows the team to remain patient when the score is close.
St. Louis enters with Joel Hofer and Jordan Binnington as its primary goaltending options. The Blues are without defenseman Tyler Tucker following a knee procedure, which makes disciplined puck management even more important. Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou can generate offense for St. Louis, but the Blues are better served making Dallas work through a set defense than exchanging rushes with the Stars.
Dallas still has Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston to drive the attack, but Matt Duchene is on long-term injured reserve. The total is only 5.5, so there is little margin for a sloppy first period, but the current price makes the under preferable to laying a larger number on Dallas. A 3-2 Stars win fits the likely game script and stays beneath the total.
Pick: Under 5.5 goals at even money or better.
Anaheim Ducks vs Vegas Golden Knights Pick
Anaheim makes its season debut in Las Vegas against a Golden Knights team that opened with a 5-2 victory over Chicago. Vegas is a substantial favorite, but a moneyline approaching -200 offers little appeal. The total provides a more attractive way to approach a game in which the Golden Knights should control more possession without necessarily needing another five-goal performance.
Anaheim opens without Troy Terry, who was placed on long-term injured reserve. That removes one of the Ducks' most dependable offensive players and increases the responsibility on Leo Carlsson, Cutter Gauthier and the rest of Anaheim's young core. The Ducks improved offensively last season, but their best path Friday is a disciplined road game rather than trying to match Vegas chance for chance.
Vegas has plenty of offensive depth with Mitch Marner, Jack Eichel, Tomas Hertl and William Karlsson among its options. That creates obvious risk for an under, but the Golden Knights also have no incentive to play recklessly if they establish a lead. Anaheim can help the wager by staying out of the penalty box and forcing Vegas to create against an organized five-man defense.
Pick: Under 6.5 goals at -110 or better.
NHL Best Bets for October 2, 2026
Friday's card is New York Rangers moneyline at +105 or better, Washington-Carolina Under 6.5 at -135 or better, Boston Bruins moneyline at +105 or better, St. Louis-Dallas Under 5.5 at even money or better, and Anaheim-Vegas Under 6.5 at -110 or better.
Those price thresholds are part of each recommendation. Opening-week markets can move quickly after goalie confirmations and lineup updates, so there is no reason to chase a wager after it moves beyond the listed number. The two underdogs offer plus-money upside, while the three totals avoid paying the premium attached to some of Friday's more expensive favorites.
