NHL Picks for October 8, 2026

The NHL has a full Thursday schedule on October 8, 2026, with ten games stretching from the early Eastern starts to Toronto's late visit to Vegas. Several matchups have a clear favorite, but a high probability of winning does not automatically translate into an attractive betting price. This card includes a mix of underdogs and modest favorites, with particular attention to recent goaltending changes and teams playing on short rest.

These selections use price thresholds rather than assuming the same odds will remain available all evening. An underdog at +150 is a different wager from that same team at +110, just as a favorite at -125 is materially different from -165. The early-season sample is small, so the strongest arguments combine personnel, matchup dynamics and the price available before puck drop.

Vancouver Canucks vs Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina enters as a substantial home favorite, and the price reflects its deeper forward group and ability to sustain offensive-zone pressure. Vancouver's challenge is getting the puck out cleanly enough to avoid repeated defensive shifts. If the Canucks are pinned in their own end, the favorite can create the volume of chances needed to justify its reputation.

The contrarian case is almost entirely about price. At a large plus number, Vancouver does not need to control possession for sixty minutes. A strong goaltending performance, opportunistic transition chances and a competitive special-teams night could be enough to produce an upset. This is a high-variance selection rather than a claim that Vancouver has the stronger roster.

Pick: Vancouver Canucks moneyline +260 or better

Utah Mammoth vs Boston Bruins

Utah's power play has been one of the most productive units of the opening week, giving the Mammoth an important route to offense even when five-on-five play is even. Boston has enough defensive structure to make this difficult, but it cannot afford to turn a close game into a parade to the penalty box.

The matchup should be decided by how often Utah can enter the zone with possession and create traffic around the Boston crease. The Bruins can disrupt that plan with disciplined positioning and clean exits. Utah is the selection at a moderate favorite price, not at any number the market offers.

Pick: Utah Mammoth moneyline -130 or better

Philadelphia Flyers vs Ottawa Senators

Ottawa's offensive talent makes it an understandable favorite at home, and the return of Linus Ullmark is an important development in goal. Philadelphia, however, has enough forechecking pressure and scoring talent to make the Senators work for clean breakouts. This is not a matchup in which Ottawa can expect uncontested entries all night.

The Flyers' appeal is the plus-money return. Philadelphia can create a competitive game by limiting Ottawa's transition attack and turning offensive-zone recoveries into chances before the Senators reset. Ottawa may have the more convincing overall case, but the underdog number leaves room for an upset.

Pick: Philadelphia Flyers moneyline +145 or better

Nashville Predators vs Montreal Canadiens

Nashville arrives after a 5-4 overtime loss in Toronto in which it surrendered a three-goal lead. That result highlights the Predators' defensive concerns, but Steven Stamkos, Filip Forsberg and Ryan O'Reilly remain dangerous enough to capitalize on a favorable matchup. Juuse Saros also gives Nashville a credible path to stealing a road game.

Montreal's goaltending situation is the major uncertainty. Sam Montembeault was injured in practice, and Jacob Fowler is scheduled to make his first start of the season. Montreal can still generate offense through Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, but Nashville's veteran scorers are capable of testing a young goalie early. The plus-money price is the attraction.

Pick: Nashville Predators moneyline +140 or better

Minnesota Wild vs Tampa Bay Lightning

Both clubs have shown an ability to defend during the opening stretch, making this a matchup where the first goal and special teams could matter more than usual. Minnesota has enough scoring talent to punish turnovers, but the absence of Nick Foligno removes a veteran option from its lineup.

Tampa Bay's case rests on its ability to control possession through its top forwards and prevent Minnesota from turning the game into an exchange of rush chances. The Lightning are a playable favorite only while the number remains below the usual expensive-moneyline range. A tight game is more likely than a runaway.

Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning moneyline -145 or better

Dallas Stars vs Buffalo Sabres

Dallas comes into Thursday after a 5-0 win over San Jose, an encouraging performance for a team that expects to contend in the Western Conference. The Stars can generate offense from multiple lines and are comfortable winning games without relying on one player to carry the scoring load.

Buffalo has the speed to make Dallas defend in transition, particularly if the Stars get careless with the puck at the offensive blue line. The key for Dallas is to make the Sabres play through layers rather than allowing repeated odd-man opportunities. At a manageable road-favorite price, the Stars are the preferred side.

Pick: Dallas Stars moneyline -125 or better

Chicago Blackhawks vs New York Islanders

The Islanders' home-ice advantage and defensive approach make them a logical favorite, but Chicago's young offensive talent can change the shape of a game with one clean transition sequence. The Blackhawks need to avoid prolonged shifts in their own zone and make New York's defense turn to retrieve pucks.

Chicago has had a difficult opening stretch, which is one reason the underdog price is substantial. That risk is real. The wager depends on the Blackhawks creating enough isolated scoring chances to stay close and then taking advantage of a late opportunity, rather than controlling the game from start to finish.

Pick: Chicago Blackhawks moneyline +150 or better

San Jose Sharks vs St. Louis Blues

San Jose's offensive outlook is complicated by uncertainty surrounding Macklin Celebrini's lower-body injury. Any limitation to its leading young creator makes it harder for the Sharks to generate controlled entries and sustained chances. St. Louis has a more stable path to offense if it can force San Jose into repeated defensive-zone shifts.

The Blues still need to avoid treating this as a routine win. San Jose has enough speed to exploit sloppy turnovers, and a short run of power plays could erase an otherwise strong five-on-five performance. St. Louis is the choice at a moderate favorite price, but not if the market stretches too far.

Pick: St. Louis Blues moneyline -145 or better

Colorado Avalanche vs Calgary Flames

Colorado has started the season with an explosive attack, and its top-end skill can overwhelm opponents when the game becomes open. Calgary therefore has a difficult assignment: limit transition opportunities, stay disciplined and force the Avalanche to build offense through sustained shifts instead of clean rushes.

The Flames are a sizeable home underdog, and that is the reason to consider them. Colorado's reputation and early scoring numbers have made the favorite expensive. Calgary can justify a speculative moneyline play if its goaltending holds up and it turns a few Colorado mistakes into high-quality chances. This is among the riskier picks on the board.

Pick: Calgary Flames moneyline +190 or better

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Vegas Golden Knights

The final game of the night brings Toronto to Vegas in a matchup with enough high-end offensive talent to produce momentum swings. Toronto needs its skill players to create chances without giving Vegas repeated counterattacks. The Golden Knights are particularly dangerous when turnovers allow them to attack before a defense is set.

Vegas deserves respect at home, but Toronto's underdog price offers a way to back its scoring ceiling without laying a favorite number. The Leafs must keep the game close through the middle period and avoid unnecessary penalties. If they do, their finishing talent can decide a tight contest late.

Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs moneyline +140 or better

NHL Picks for October 8: Final Betting Card

Thursday’s selections are Vancouver, Utah, Philadelphia, Nashville, Tampa Bay, Dallas, Chicago, St. Louis, Calgary and Toronto at the prices listed above. The largest underdog plays, particularly Vancouver and Calgary, carry substantial upset risk; their inclusion reflects the payout rather than an expectation that they will dictate play. Utah, Tampa Bay, Dallas and St. Louis are the more conventional favorite positions, with strict price limits.

Check the actual market and confirmed lineups before placing a wager. A late goalie change, a scratch or a significant odds move can invalidate the original handicap. Passing on a game when its qualifying price disappears is preferable to chasing a selection simply because it appears on a published card.
