Can the Flyers find their first win of the season?
The Philadelphia Flyers are a young, up-and-coming team coming into this season, and with a new Head Coach behind the bench in Rick Tocchet, they're hoping that they can take a major leap over the course of 82 games. Their biggest pickup of the off-season on the ice was young forward Trevor Zegras, and with a new backup goaltender in Dan Vladar, the hope is that they can grind out some early wins and get themselves into the Wild Card race.
Leading the scoring for Philadelphia a year ago was veteran Travis Konecny with 76 points, but if they're to find success in 2025/26, it will come on the back of second-year star Matvei Michkov, who showed true star power last year. Last time out for the Flyers was a tough loss to the Florida Panthers, with the lone goal to Noah Cates not enough to get the job done as they fell 2-1 despite an impressive 32 saves from Vladar.
Expected starter: Samuel Ersson (.883 save percentage, 3.14 GAA in 47 games last year)
Can the Hurricanes finally make their Stanley Cup push?
The Carolina Hurricanes have been building something very special in recent years, and after finishing the 2024/25 regular season with a mark of 47-30-5, they're hoping to take yet another step forward this season. They weren't shy about making additions over the summer either, adding Nikolaj Ehlers and K'Andre Miller to this squad as they look to finally fulfil their Stanley Cup potential.
Unsurprisingly, it was star forward Sebastian Aho led the scoring with 74 a season ago, and with so much depth on this current roster, they're arguably the favorite to win the Metropolitan Division in 2025/26. Last time out for the Hurricanes was a big victory in their opener with the New Jersey Devils, with Miller and Seth Jarvis picking up two goals a piece as Frederik Andersen allowed three goals on 22 shots, something that didn't stop them as they came away winners 6-3.
Expected starter: Frederik Andersen (.899 save percentage and 2.50 GAA in 22 games a season ago)
Philadelphia Flyers vs. Carolina Hurricanes pick
Moneyline pick for Flyers vs. Hurricanes
- Carolina -1.5 (4 units)
Over the past few years, the Carolina Hurricanes have absolutely dominated this Metropolitan Division rivalry, going 9-1 in their last 10 head-to-head matchups with the Flyers dating back to December of the 2022 season.
On top of that, Carolina went 31-9-1 at home last year, one of the best records in the entire NHL, and with their big stars starting the 2025/26 campaign red-hot, expect them to make it 2-0-0 at home with a victory in this one.
Over/under pick for Flyers vs. Hurricanes
- Over 7 (4 units)
In three meetings between these two teams a year ago, the over came in at 2-1, with latter two of them seeing just five total goals scored in each, but after the Hurricanes offense started 2025 hot with six goals, this one could see plenty more offense.
For the Flyers, they had some of the worst goaltending in the NHL a season ago, with Ersson having an .883 save percentage in 2024/25, and for the Hurricanes, the offense was humming for much of the season, with the team averaging 3.24 goals scored per game in 2024/25.
Keep it simple, take the over.
