On Thursday, they take on the Florida Panthers (1-0-0), a team that came out hot after winning back-to-back Stanley Cups, and despite some injuries, this is still a team that's confident they can three-peat in 2025/26. Read on to see our Philadelphia Flyers vs. Florida Panthers prediction.

Can the Flyers start their season with a major upset?
The Philadelphia Flyers are a team with a good blend of youth and experience, and with a new Head Coach in Rick Tocchet behind the bench, the hope is that they can make a genuine Wild Card push in the Eastern Conference. The story of the Flyers' 2024/25 campaign was breakout star rookie Matvei Michkov, who tallied 63 points in 80 games played, and with the addition of Trevor Zegras this offseason, the offense should be just as exciting heading into the new season.
Away from home last year, the Flyers posted a 13-19-9 record, but with the injection of a new coach, the hope is that they can come out of the gates red-hot as they look to upset the reigning Champions in Game One. In net for Philadelphia here will be the talented young Samuel Ersson, who emerged as the team's starter last year despite posting just an .883 save percentage and a 3.14 GAA, with the team potentially looking to new backup Dan Vladar if Ersson starts the season slow.
Can the Panthers start their season with two straight wins?
The Florida Panthers have been the NHL's best team over the past few years, and after their quest for a three-peat began with an opening night victory, they're optimistic that this season will be another one that ends in a Stanley Cup. Last season, there were few teams more balanced than the Panthers, who ranked both top-10 in goals scored and goals allowed, but with both Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk out to start the season, the lineup isn't exactly ideal.
Once more, the Panthers will return to their No. 1 Sergei Bobrovsky in this one, and with a 2.44 GAA and a .906 save percentage across 53 games a season ago, and now, the team will lean on him a lot early in the new season as well. Last time out for the Panthers was their second straight banner-raising night to start the season, and while the Chicago Blackhawks made it tough, 17 saves from Bobrovsky and a game-winner to Jesper Boqvist helped them pick up the 3-2 victory.
Philadelphia Flyers vs. Florida Panthers pick
Moneyline pick for Flyers vs. Panthers
- Florida -1.5 (4 units)
Unsurprisingly, when these two teams met three times in 2024/25, it was the Florida Panthers that came out on top in two of those matchups, and even with the injuries, this is still a much more star studded roster than the Philadelphia Flyers.
On top of that, the Panthers posted a 27-12-2 record at home last season, and after a solid victory in their home opener to start the year, they'll want to make an early statement with another big time victory in this one.
Over/under pick for Flyers vs. Panthers
- Over 5.5 (4 units)
In those three head-to-head encounters last season, the average total goals scored between the Flyers and Panthers was 8.5, and with the Flyers struggling in net for much of last year, they'll be in for some high-scoring games in 2025/26.
Last season, the Philadelphia Flyers ranked 25th in the league in goals allowed, and with a more offensive minded coach taking over, they'll improve in scoring this season, and for the Panthers, they scored three goals in their opening contest this year, and with Bobrovsky having a below average campaign in terms of save percentage, this could be a high-scoring matchup.
Keep it simple, take the over.
