While it is still early into the season, the Seattle Kraken are 2nd in the Pacific division with eight points in five games. They are only two points behind the Vegas Golden Knights for the top spot with a game in hand. They are 2-0-0 at home but 1-0-2 on the road thus far. Meanwhile, the Flyers are 6th in the Metro division, obtaining only five points in the first five games of the season. They are 2-1 at home this season and 0-1-1 on the road. Philadelphia is currently favored at a -130 money line while the total is set at 5.5 goals. Can the Kraken improve upon their solid start with a road win?

Seattle's offense ranks 11th in goals per game, 5th on the power play, 19th in shots per game, and 28th in the face-off circle. Jaden Schwartz is one of seven players to have four points on the year thus far. Jared McCann has the most goals on the squad with three and Jordan Eberle has a team-high four assists. Shane Wright has the best +/- ratio among the offensive skaters with a +2 and Marchment has an offense-high four penalty minutes already to start his season. Chandler Stephenson is the only offensive skater for Seattle to reach above 20 minutes of average ice time and McCann has a team-high 14 shots. Four different players have scored on the power play so far, but nobody has scored more than once. Jordan Eberle has a team-high two power play assists.
On the defensive side, Vince Dunn leads the entire squad in points with five and leads the defense with two goals to his name. Mahura has the best +/- ratio with a +4 and Dunn has the most penalty minutes with six. Adam Larsson is the only member of the Kraken to average over 23 minutes of ice time. While no defender has scored on the power play yet, Dunn has a team-high two power play assists and he leads the blue-liners with 12 shots. Joey Daccord has taken over the mantle as the starting goalie for the Kraken, and he has a 2.39 GAA with a 91.2% save percentage to start the season. As a collective, the Kraken are ranked 10th in goals against per game, 21st on the penalty kill, and 15th in shots against. Brandon Montour is listed as day-to-day while three other players are out for this upcoming contest.
Flyers Flying Low
Philadelphia also managed to get an overtime win, beating the Wild in their most recent outing by a score of 2-1. Noah Cates and Owen Tippett scored a goal each for the Flyers while the latter led the team in shots with five. Four different players provided an assist on the day and Dan Vladar stopped 15 of 16 shots in the effort.
The Flyers have struggled a bit on the offensive end to start out, ranking 25th in goals per game, dead last in shots per game, 12th in the face-off circle, and dead last on the power play. Sean Couturier leads the unit with five points although four other players have four points on the year. Tyson Foerster has the best +/- ratio with a +5 and Tippett is tied for the most penalty minutes with six. Couturier leads the offensive skaters in time on the ice and Tippett has scored the only power play goal for the Flyers thus far. Trevor Zegras and Travis Konecny each have a power play assist and Tippett has the most shots with 14.
On the defensive side, Travis Sanheim leads most categories with four points, an average of 27:15 of ice time, three assists, one goal, and six total shots on the season. Jamie Drysdale has two penalty minutes on the year to lead the blue-liners and Nick Seeler has a defense-high +1. Vladar and Samuel Ersson have been splitting time in net for the Flyers, with Vladar producing much better numbers including a 1.65 GAA and a 93.4% save percentage. As a unit, Philadelphia's defense ranks 11th in goals against, tenth on the penalty kill, and 12th in shots against. Ethan Samson and Rasmus Ristolainen are out for this upcoming contest with injuries to their upper-body and abdomen respectively.
Kraken vs Flyers Pick
Spread Pick for Kraken vs Flyers
- Seattle Kraken Money Line (4 units)
Seattle has managed to take each of their last four games into overtime or a shootout. Therefore, Seattle has given themselves several chances to earn the two points. Philadelphia has been able to keep most of their games within one score, but their 5-2 loss against the Jets concerns me. It seems that they don't have a great plan in net right now despite Vladar's hot start to the season. Seattle's penalty kill would worry me a bit if it wasn't for the Flyers and their awful power play unit going against them. Seattle has won five of their last six against the Flyers and underdogs might be the smarter play for the start of the season.
Over/Under pick for Kraken vs Flyers
- Over 5.5 (4 units)
Seattle started out strong on defense in their first two games of the season. Coincidentally or not, both of those games were at home. The next three they have played have been all on the road, giving up an average of four goals per game across those three matches. Both teams are 3-2 on the over this season and despite Vladar's impressive start to the season, I expect him to regress a bit more as the season goes on. Both teams have brought in new talent to boost their offensive production, and it should show in this game.
