Close and Then Not So Close for Blues

In losing two in a row, the Blues played a close 2-1 OT loss game first and then were beaten badly in their last game in a 7-4 home loss to the Utah Mammoth. In that game, they were outscored 4-0 in the first period and for the game were outshot 25-20. Four different players lit the lamp in the losing effort and Oskar Sundqvist and Colton Parayko each had two assists. Joel Hofer (1-1-0 5.01 GAA) stated and was yanked after giving up three goals on six shots under eight minutes and Jordan Binnington (2-2-1 2.60 GAA) replaced him and gave up three goals on 18 shots. Binnington is the top netminder and he had not given up more than two goals in four straight starts before giving up three in relief in the last game.

On the season, the Blues rank 25th in the league, averaging 2.86 goals per game and 30th, giving up an average of 3.86 goals per game. Jake Neighbours is one of three players in the team lead with five points (4 goals, 1 assists), leads them in goals, and has not registered a point in the last three games. Jordan Kyrou also has five points, with only one coming on a goal after leading St. Louis last season with 36 goals. On the season, the Blues have won both of their road games (2-0-0).

Red Wings Slow Down on Defense

After a five-game win streak where the Red Wings only gave up an average of 1.80 goals per game, they have lost their last two games, giving up a total of 11 goals. In their last game they gave up a season high in a 7-2 road loss to the New York Islanders, where they were down 5-0 after the second period. Dylan Larkin and Jonatan Berggren each scored in the loss and Cam Talbot (3-1-0 2.98 GAA) was lit u,p giving up seven goals on 30 shots. Talbot had only given up a total of three goals in his previous two starts and if he does not get the start facing the Blues, John Gibson (2-2-0 3.31 GAA) will. Like Talbot, Gibson was solid in two starts, giving up a total of three goals before giving up four in his last start.

On the young season, the Red Wings are averaging 3.00 goals per game and rank tied for 19th, giving up an average of 3.13 goals per game. Larkin ranks tied for second in the league in goals (6) and points (13) and has four goals and four assists in the last four games. Only two other players have more than two goals, with Mason Appleton and Emmitt Finnie each with three goals. Patrick Kane has two goals and three assists and has missed the last two games, and is questionable to face the Blues. On the season, Detroit is 4-1 at home and they are in second place in the Atlantic Division, two points back of the Montreal Canadiens.

Blues vs. Red Wings Pick

Money Line pick for Blues vs. Red Wings

  • Pick: Red Wings (+4 Units)

Both of these teams have lost two in a row, and each gave up seven goals in their last game. The Red Wings had won five in a row playing solid defense before losing their last two where they gave up a total of 11 goals. The Blues have lost three of four games where they gave up at least seven goals in two of the losses and they rank third to last in the league, giving up an average of 3.86 goals per game. In terms of the St. Louis Blues vs. Detroit Red Wings prediction, Detroit will be decent on defense but will shine on the attack, which is why they will get the win and send the Blues to their third straight loss.

Over/Under Pick for Blues vs. Red Wings

  • Over (+4 Units)Β

The total has gone Over in each team’s last two games, and that is the pick I am leaning towards in this game. Both teams gave up seven goals in their last game and while giving up a total of 11 goals in their last two games, the Red Wings have played better defense on the season. On the flip side, the Blues rank third to last in the NHL in goals allowed per game, and they have given up at least seven goals in two of their last three games. The Detroit defense will be better in this gam,e and their attack will light the lamp often, which is the main reason the Over is the pick here.
