The Washington Capitals will host the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. EST in Capital One Arena. Check out our St. Louis Blues vs Washington Capitals pick and prediction here!

St. Louis is currently at the bottom of the Central division with ten points in 13 games played. They are 2-6-2 in their last ten and are 2-3 on the road this season. While they have started slow, we have to be wary of when they go on their classic hot streak, like they did last year and in 2019 in particular. Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals are tied for last in the Metro division with 13 points in 12 games played. They are 3-4 at home and 5-4-1 in their last ten. Washington is favored at a -150 money line while the total is set at an even six goals. Can Washington climb itself back up the division with a home win?

Despite being at the bottom of the division, St. Louis recently picked up a win against the Edmonton Oilers by a score of 3-2. Robert Thomas led the way with two points, including a goal and an assist, while Dalibor Dvorsky and Pius Suter each scored for the Blues. Jordan Binnington made 24 of 26 saves in the effort, while Thomas led the team with four shots on goal.

The Blues are currently ranked 21st in goals per game, 21st in shots per game, 18th in the face-off circle, and 10th on the power play. Suter has the most points on the squad with eight, while Jake Neighbors has a team-high six goals, and Robert Thomas has six assists to lead the team. Suter has a team-high +2, and Dylan Holloway is the only forward averaging at least 19 minutes per game on the ice. Brayden Schenn has the most penalty minutes among offensive skaters with 11, and Thomas has three power-play assists to his name. While Jordan Kyrou and Holloway each have a team-high 30 shots on the year, Pavel Buchnevich and Jimmy Snuggerud each have two power-play goals to lead the squad.

On the defensive side, Justin Faulk is the main man with six points, including two goals. Colton Parayko has six assists to his name to be fair, and Tyler Tucker is at a +2. However, Tucker has the most penalty minutes on the team with 19. Faulk has the most ice time on average with 23:27, and he is the only defender to score on the power play so far. Faulk and Cam Fowler are tied for the lead in power play assists with three each and they each have 23 shots to their name, most among blue-liners. Binnington is the primary goaltender for the Blues with a 3.08 GAA and an 86.8% save percentage. Overall, the Blues are ranked 31st in goals against, 28th on the penalty kill, and 7th in shots against. Neighbors is the only player listed on the injury report for the Blues, and he is out for this upcoming contest.

Washington Wishing for Wins

Washington managed to get one point but fell to the Buffalo Sabres by a score of 4-3 in a shootout in their latest contest. Sonny Milano, Dylan Strome, and Aliaksei Protas each earned a goal on the day, while Strome led the team with six shots. Charlie Lindgren made 21 of 24 saves in the effort, and nobody had more than one point for the Capitals.

Washington's offense ranks 28th in goals per game, 27th on the power play, 11th in shots per game, and 24th in the face-off circle. Tom Wilson currently holds the mantle in goals with six and points with 13, while Strome has a team-high eight assists. Expectedly, Wilson also has the most penalty minutes with 27. Strome has a team-high +6, and Wilson has the most ice time on average among forwards at 19:34. He also has a team-high three power play goals, and Strome has four power play assists. Protas has the most shots among offensive skaters with 28. Three players are listed on the injury report for Washington, with all listed as out.

Among the defensive skaters for Washington, John Carlson and Jacob Chychrun have seven points each. The latter has three goals to his name, while the former has five assists to lead the defenders. Chychrun has a +6, but he also has a defense-high six penalty minutes to his name. Carlson has the most time on the ice on average at 23:57, and Chychrun is the only defender with a power-play goal. Carlson has three power-play assists on the season, and Chychrun has the most shots overall on the squad with 35. Logan Thompson is still the primary goalie with an insane 1.51 GAA and a 93.5% save percentage. Overall, the Capitals are #1 in goals against, 22nd on the penalty kill, and 5th in shots against on the season.

Blues vs Capitals Pick

Spread Pick for Blues vs Capitals

  • Washington Capitals Money Line (4 units)

I was tempted to take the spread for Washington, but I decided to make the safer play and take the money line here. Washington has the edge in net by far, and they will have the home crowd advantage. Washington's lack of scoring these past few games also makes me hesitant on taking the spread, but the fact that Ovechkin doesn't have to carry the team on offense makes me just a tad more confident in them. St. Louis has scored two or three goals in each of their last five games, and against a tough defense in Washington, I expect it to score two goals or less. Washington should do enough to score more than St. Louis in this one, particularly with Binnington struggling a bit out of the gate.

Over/Under pick for Blues vs Capitals

  • Under 6 (4 units)

I'm banking on Thompson getting the start in this one, and he has been phenomenal in goal to start the season, similar to his production from last year. I have confidence that Binnington will improve upon his stats as well, but both teams are top seven in shots against this season. This means that both defenses have done a solid job thus far. The total being at six is interesting because it gives us a cushion of a push, just in case it goes to a total of six goals. I really doubt the game reaches seven goals, so I'm more comfortable taking the under here. Washington is 6-4-2 on the under this yea,r and they have scored one goal or less in their last three or four games. The Blues haven't scored more than three goals in each of their last five games.
