Blue line to crease — NHL picks for Tampa Bay Lightning at Columbus Blue Jackets without the fluff.
Tampa Bay Needs Defensive Stability
Tampa Bay’s offensive numbers have been respectable through four games, averaging 3.25 goals per contest while converting at a 30% rate on the power play. Brayden Point continues to lead the Rays’ attack with five points (2 goals, 3 assists), and Jake Guentzel has added four assists on the top line. The Lightning’s puck movement has been solid, especially on the man advantage, where Victor Hedman’s shots remain a key weapon from the point. However, defensive problems have caused problems late in games, as evidenced by its overtime loss to Washington.
The Lightning’s transition game remains dangerous, but have struggled to prevent shots in their own end. Opponents are averaging over 31 shots per game against Tampa Bay, forcing Andrei Vasilevskiy and Jonas Johansson to make many more saves per game than in previous seasons. The penalty kill has been solid at 87.5%, but even-strength play has been the defense’s undoing. Tampa Bay’s blue line needs better shifts from its second pair, as Hedman and Sergachev are playing too many minutes, creating problems late in games that opponents have exploited.
Goaltending has been up and down. Vasilevskiy is off to a shaky start (0–2–1, 4.08 GAA, .870 SV%), while Johansson (1–0–0, 3.02 GAA, .909 SV%) has been steadier in limited duty. Given Vasilevskiy’s talent, improvement is likely, but early-season problems are obvious. When the Lightning stay disciplined and control tempo with puck possession, they are a tough team to beat; the problem has been sustaining that control for three periods.

Injuries: The Lightning have taken a hit. Scott Sabourin is day-to-day, while Zemgus Girgensons and Niko Huuhtanen remain on injured reserve, though both could return within the week. Nick Paul (IR-LT) is the most notable absence, removing a key forechecking presence.
Columbus Still Searching For Identity
The Blue Jackets’ start has been rocky at 1–3–0, with two home losses that have exposed problems on defense, the power play, and penalty kill. The Blue Jackets are averaging 2.75 goals per game but allowing 3.25, struggling to defend in their own end. Kirill Marchenko has been the most productive, leading the club with four goals and five points. Columbus has controlled the tempo well at times but has lacked consistency, alternating between strong puck possession and costly turnovers.
The power play has underperformed, converting just 9.1% of the time with the man advantage, while the penalty kill has been disastrous at 53.3%, allowing seven power-play goals in four games. Poor penalty kill play was evident in Thursday’s 4–1 loss to Colorado, where Columbus took multiple minor penalties that swung the game’s momentum. Even with strong play on the blue line from Ivan Provorov and Zach Werenski, lapses from others and poor clearing have led to the Blue Jackets spending too much time in their own end.
Goaltending has been solid. Elvis Merzlikins (1–1–0, 3.54 GAA, .920 SV%) has battled under pressure and kept games closer than the scores suggest. Jet Greaves (.932 SV%) has looked promising but remains winless. The defense in front of them must tighten up; Columbus is allowing nearly 37 shots per night, far too high for a team with limited scoring punch.
Injuries: Columbus remains short-handed defensively, with Erik Gudbranson (out until Oct. 18) sidelined and winger Miles Wood expected to miss another week.
Tampa Bay Lightning at Columbus Blue Jackets Pick
Spread Pick for Lightning vs. Blue Jackets
- Tampa Bay Lightning -1.5 (+150) (4 Units)
Tampa Bay holds the advantage at both ends of the ice and on special teams. The Lightning rank among the league’s top power-play units (30%) and have an 87.5% penalty kill, a big contrast to Columbus’s struggling units. With the Blue Jackets allowing seven power-play goals in four games and allowing over 37 shots against, Tampa Bay’s top line should see plenty of scoring chances. Vasilevskiy’s talent, though not displayed much of yet, and Tampa's firepower will lead the Lightning to a win on Saturday.
Over/Under Pick for Lightning vs. Blue Jackets
- Over 6.5 (5 Units)
This matchup is between two teams that have been inconsistent thus far on defense. Tampa Bay’s four contests have all featured at least six combined goals, and Columbus’s porous penalty kill will result in more scoring. The Lightning’s aggressive forecheck often opens up counterattacks the other way, meaning both teams will get quality looks. With Brayden Point and Marchenko leading their respective attacks and both goaltenders facing plenty of shots on goal, the total will finish over.
