Vancouver has managed just one victory at Rogers Arena this season, and Saturday brings a visit from a Toronto team that has scored plenty of goals lately. The Canucks are last in the Pacific Division at 3-11-1 with seven points after Thursday's 3-2 defeat in San Jose. Toronto sits sixth in the Atlantic at 7-6-2 with 16 points, coming off a 5-4 loss to Seattle on Wednesday. The Maple Leafs have dropped two straight after winning three in a row. Toronto Maple Leafs Looking to Stop the Slide

Toronto's visit to Seattle on Wednesday ended with another frustrating result. The Maple Leafs scored four times but couldn't keep the Kraken from getting five, with Chandler Stephenson accounting for two of Seattle's goals. Calgary had beaten Toronto 5-2 on Monday, making it two losses since the Leafs' impressive 7-2 win at Edmonton. That victory was part of a three-game winning streak that also included the Rangers and Columbus. Toronto has been finding the net regularly, but its defensive play hasn't matched the work being done at the other end of the ice.

Auston Matthews has 10 goals and 23 points, putting him among the NHL's top scorers. William Nylander has nine goals, giving Toronto another forward opponents cannot afford to leave open. The Leafs average 3.73 goals per game, although their goaltending has been inconsistent. Anthony Stolarz has won four times and owns a 2.80 goals-against average, while Sergei Bobrovsky has three victories with a 3.29 average. Toronto's attack has been strong enough to win games, but the Leafs need to avoid the defensive mistakes that hurt them against Seattle and Calgary.

Injuries: Kirill Marchenko, Miles Wood, Chris Tanev, Nick Blankenburg and Marshall Rifai are out.

Vancouver Canucks Need More From Their Home Games

The Canucks had an opportunity to pick up another road victory Thursday, but San Jose held them off 3-2. Vancouver had beaten Anaheim 6-5 in overtime two nights earlier, ending a run of three consecutive defeats. Those losses came against Minnesota, Detroit and Carolina, with the Canucks allowing at least four goals each time. Vancouver hasn't had much success at Rogers Arena either. Five losses in six home games have left the Canucks searching for a way to make their own building a tougher place for visitors.

Elias Pettersson has been Vancouver's main playmaker, recording 12 assists and 16 points. Jonathan Lekkerimaki leads the team with six goals, while Brock Boeser has contributed four. Scoring hasn't completely disappeared for the Canucks, who average three goals per game. The bigger problem is keeping the puck out of their net. Kevin Lankinen has just one victory and has endured several difficult outings. Leevi Merilainen has fared somewhat better, but Vancouver continues to allow too many scoring chances. Toronto's forwards will be eager to exploit those openings Saturday.

Injuries: Akil Thomas, Mackenzie MacEachern and Thatcher Demko are out.

Key To The Game

Toronto has enough attacking talent to make Vancouver pay for defensive mistakes, particularly with Matthews and Nylander finding the net regularly. The Canucks need Pettersson to create chances, but possession alone won't help if Toronto gets repeated opportunities around the crease. Special teams could be decisive. The Leafs convert 31.3% of their power plays, while Vancouver has killed only 65.4% of opposing opportunities. Staying disciplined is essential for the Canucks, whose goaltending has already been under considerable pressure.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Vancouver Canucks Game Pick

  • Toronto Maple Leafs

Vancouver's home record makes the Canucks difficult to support against a Toronto team capable of scoring in bunches. The Leafs haven't defended particularly well themselves, but Matthews and Nylander should find openings against a defense allowing more than four goals per game. Toronto also has the stronger goaltending options, especially if Stolarz gets the start. Pettersson can make things interesting for Vancouver, although the hosts have struggled to protect leads and prevent chances. I expect Toronto's attack to make the difference. I'm taking the Maple Leafs.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Vancouver Canucks Over/Under Pick

  • Over

Vancouver has been giving up goals at an alarming rate, and Toronto hasn't exactly been keeping opponents quiet either. The Leafs' last two defeats featured 10 and seven combined goals, while Vancouver's overtime win at Anaheim produced 11. Matthews gives Toronto a dangerous scoring threat, and the Canucks have enough attacking talent to contribute themselves. Neither team's recent defensive performances inspire much confidence, particularly with Vancouver struggling in goal. Saturday could bring another busy night for both goaltenders. Over is my pick.
