Tage Thompson looks to lead the Sabres over the Flames

The Utah Mammoth will head to Buffalo, New York, Saturday night for a matchup against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM with coverage available on ESPN+. Utah will look to continue building momentum early in the regular season as the Mammoth face another Eastern Conference opponent. Utah has enough young offensive talent to make things difficult for Buffalo and will attempt to create scoring opportunities throughout the game. The Sabres return home looking to pick up an important victory and improve their position in the Atlantic Division standings. Buffalo will need to establish its offense and find ways to slow down an Utah team capable of creating problems in transition. This preview was completed prior to the opening lines being released. Utah hunts 4th win of the year

Utah has been productive offensively early in the regular season, averaging 3.6 goals on 32.2 shots per game. The Mammoth have been solid defensively as well, allowing 2.8 goals on 22.2 shots per contest. Utah comes into the weekend with a 3-2 record after winning three of its first five games. The Mammoth have been particularly effective on the power play, converting 40% of their opportunities, while posting a 77.8% penalty-kill rate. Nick Schmaltz has been one of Utah's most productive offensive players, while Clayton Keller continues to provide scoring opportunities as a playmaker. The Mammoth have also received contributions from Jack McBain and several other players as they work to build on their early-season success.

Utah suffered a disappointing 6-1 defeat against the Boston Bruins Thursday night at TD Garden. Jack McBain scored the Mammoth's only goal in the third period after Utah had fallen behind 6-0 through the first two periods. Sebastian Cossa struggled in net, allowing three goals on eight shots before being replaced by Karel Vejmelka, who finished with 11 saves. Utah had entered the game with the NHL's most productive power play but failed to convert on any of its seven opportunities against Boston. The Mammoth also allowed three power-play goals as the Bruins controlled the game throughout the evening. Utah will need a much stronger defensive performance to get back in the win column.

Buffalo tries to get back rolling

Buffalo has struggled to consistently produce offense through its first four games, averaging 2.5 goals on 27 shots per contest. Defensively, the Sabres have allowed 3.75 goals on just 19 shots per game, putting significant pressure on their goaltending. Buffalo comes into the weekend with a 2-2 record after splitting its first four outings. The Sabres have failed to convert a power-play opportunity this season and have posted a 63.6% penalty-kill rate. Owen Power has provided important offensive production, including a game-winning goal against Minnesota, while Buffalo continues to look for more consistency from its offensive group. The Sabres have scored 10 total goals while allowing 15 and will need to improve on both ends of the ice.

Buffalo was shut out Thursday night, falling 4-0 against the Dallas Stars at KeyBank Center. The Sabres were unable to solve Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger, who stopped all 26 shots he faced. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen finished with 14 saves as Dallas scored once in the opening period and three more times in the second. Buffalo had entered the game following a 3-2 overtime victory against Minnesota, a matchup that saw Owen Power score the game-winning goal after the Sabres overcame a two-goal deficit. The Sabres have now allowed the opening goal in three consecutive games and will need to find ways to establish their offense earlier when Utah comes to town.

Tampa Bay Lightning vsΒ Utah Mammoth vs Buffalo Sabres Picks and Prediction

Pick: Utah Mammoth

Utah has a good opportunity to pick up a road victory Saturday night when the Mammoth visit Buffalo. The Sabres have enough offensive talent to make things difficult, but Utah should be able to create problems with its speed and young playmakers. Buffalo will need to remain disciplined defensively and avoid giving the Mammoth too many opportunities around the net. Utah has the ability to generate scoring chances in transition and should be able to challenge the Buffalo defense throughout the game. The Sabres will benefit from playing at home, but the Mammoth should be able to find enough offensive success to keep control of the matchup. Look for Utah to make the necessary plays late and come away with the victory.

Pick: Over

Utah and Buffalo could produce plenty of offensive opportunities Saturday night when the two teams meet at KeyBank Center. Both clubs have talented young players who can create scoring chances, and neither defense should have an easy time containing the opposing attack. Utah will look to use its speed to generate opportunities, while Buffalo should be able to create chances with its own offensive talent. The Sabres will need to protect the puck and avoid allowing Utah to capitalize on turnovers. Both teams should also have opportunities to score on the power play if the game becomes physical. Expect an open matchup with plenty of shots on goal and enough offensive production from both sides to create a high-scoring game.
