Western Conference sides face off in ‘Music City’ on Thursday night and we have the Canucks vs. Predators predictions sure to strike the right note. Vancouver (4-3-0, 8 pts.) got beat up in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, losing 5-1. Nashville (2-3-2, 6 pts.) fell at home against Anaheim on Tuesday, 5-2. This matchup is scheduled to get rolling at 8:00 EST from the Bridgestone Arena, and remember, nobody does it better when it comes to NHL picks!

Canucks find success on road

The Canucks are in the midst of a five-game road trip, which started out with two regulation wins and one shootout win before they got to Pittsburgh on Tuesday. It was the second time that they allowed five goals in a game this season as the Penguins got off 26 shots to Vancouver’s 24.

The Canucks are second in the Pacific Division through seven games. They rank 20th in scoring, averaging 2.86 goals per game. A good reason for the lack of scoring is their 25.1 shots per game average, fifth-fewest in the NHL. The team has notched four power-play goals and one short-handed, to date. Kiefer Sherwood scored the team’s lone goal on Tuesday, and he leads the team with four scores. Connor Garland has picked up two goals and five assists to lead the Canucks with seven points.

Defensively, Vancouver has allowed 3.14 goals per game, the 14th-ranked scoring defense in the NHL. The 30.3 shots per game that they are allowing are tied for the eighth most in the league. They have gotten physical, ranking fifth with 182 hits, of which Sherwood has 32, tied for fifth overall. The Canucks have also blocked 117 shots, sixth most in the NHL. Quinn Hughes is second in the league with 26:15 TOI/PG and has a goal and four assists. They’ve alternated goalies over the last six games, which puts Thatcher Demko in line to start this one. In four starts this season, the netminder is 3-1-0 with a 2.28 goals against average and .922 save percentage.

Team notes

  • Tyler Myers has gotten in front of 19 shots and is tied for sixth in the league in blocked shots.
  • Garland is tied for fourth in the league with 11 shots on the power play.
  • Aatu Raty has won 36 of 58 face-offs.

Predators hit early season slump

The first three games of the season signaled a strong start for the Predators, with two wins and an overtime loss. But they started to unravel in the midst of a four-game road trip and that trickled into their return home on Tuesday, where they lost for the fourth straight game.

Nashville is in last place in the Central Division through seven games, due in large part to a lack of offense. Their scoring offense ranks 29th overall, averaging 2.43 goals per game, and just 1.7 per game over their last five. They are getting 27 shots on goal a night, 18th in the league. The Predators are one of three teams in the league with only two power play goals, and they have not had any scoring luck while down a man. Six players have a team-high two goals. Roman Josi has a goal and four assists to lead the Preds with five points. Steven Stamkos has just one assist over the last four games. No regular in the lineup has a positive +/-.

The Predators’ defense is giving up 3.43 goals per game, the eighth-highest average against in the league. They are 10th in shots against, allowing 29.7 a game. On the penalty kill, they’ve allowed only three goals in 23 chances. The team has shied away from contact a bit, recording 131 hits thus far, 24th in the league. They are also 27th overall with 86 blocked shots. Filip Forsberg has a team-high 20 hits. Josi is averaging the most ice time on the team, 24:56 per game, and has blocked a team-high 13 shots while fellow blue liner Justin Barron has blocked 10. Juuse Soros has started six of their seven games and has a 2.78 GAA with a .906 save percentage.

Team notes

  • Michael McCarron is tied for eighth in the league with 16 penalty minutes.
  • Steven Stamkos has nine power-play shots, eighth in the NHL.
  • Team ranks fifth in the league with 36 takeaways.

Canucks vs. Predators Picks

Money Line Pick for Canucks vs. Predators

  • Vancouver -105 (5 units)

Last season, Nashville took two of the three meetings between these two. The Preds are in rough shape coming into their first matchup this season. Their lack of goal scorers is really becoming an issue, and now their defense is collapsing under the weight. Saros has been a mess between the pipes of late, but it looks like Nashville is going to ride him into the ice. Their backup Justus Annunen allowed five goals over two periods in his lone start, so whoever they put in the crease will not help their case. On the flip side, the alternating goalies for Vancouver have been working well and Demko is always a solid choice. The Canucks have the opportunity to win four of five games on the road and they are going to push to do just that. They won in their lone visit to Nashville last season, and they are 6-4 against the Preds in the last ten games between the teams.

Take the Canucks.

Over/Under Pick for Canucks vs. Predators

  • Under 5.5 (5 units)

This matchup features two teams in the bottom third of the league in scoring. The Predators have struggled mightily to find goal scorers, and though they have yet to be shut out, they’ve scored two goals or less in their last three games and in five of their seven games this season. The Canucks offense has had issues getting shots on goal, which has in turn limited their scoring. They’ve been heavy hitters on the defense end, so they’ve more than made up for it on that end, and both of their goaltenders have played decently to this point. Vancouver has scored three goals or fewer in four games and allowed three goals or fewer in five games. Over their last seven meetings, teams have scored a combined four goals or fewer five times. The under is 6-4 in the last ten meetings.

Take the under.
