Capitals Relying On Defense
Washington is heading to Dallas after their loss on Saturday to the Senators with a final score of 7-1. This is only the second loss in the last eight games for the Capitals as they head on the road for Tuesday’s match before heading back home on Friday to face the Islanders. Washington is currently on a strange schedule where they do not have any consecutive road or home games for the next few games and will be bouncing back and forth between the road and home.
The Capitals are not showing signs of their previous success last season as they sit 19th in scoring so far this season. This is not for a lack of trying, as the Capitals rank ninth in shots, averaging 29.6 shots per game. To combat their poor offense this season, the Capitals have looked great on defense, leading the league in goals allowed. Washington is fourth in save percentage at .912 and is allowing an average of only 26.5 shots per game.
We will likely see Logan Thompson start in net for the Capitals on Tuesday.
Logan Thompson:
- has a record of 5-1-0 in 6 games with a goals against average of 1.50 and a save percentage of .938 this season.
- has a record of 1-1-1 in 3 games with a goals against average of 2.00 and a save percentage of .929 versus the Stars in his career.
Injuries:
- Strome C Day To Day - Lower Body
- Sandin D Out - Upper-body

Stars’ Power Play Keeping Offense Alive
Dallas is returning home after their win on Sunday versus the Predators with a final score of 3-2. This would only be the second win for the Stars in their last six games. Dallas is returning home for their game against the Capitals before heading down to Florida for a two-game road trip.
The Stars have struggled to put up goals this season as they sit 19th in scoring this season. This is due to their poor quality of shooting, ranking 20th in shooting percentage at 10.8%. Many of their goals this season have come from the power play, in which they rank third in the league at 32.3%. The Stars’ power play has been successful, but it has not been enough to carry the team to a win. The penalty kill for the Stars has not been as impressive, sitting 27th in the NHL at 67.9%.
We will likely see Jake Oettinger start in the net for the Stars on Tuesday.
Jake Oettinger:
- has a 4-2-1 record in 7 games with a goals against average of 2.98 and a save percentage of .899 this season.
- has a record of 5-0-0 in 6 games with a goals against average of 1.49 and a save percentage of .952 against the Capitals in his career.
Injuries:
- Hintz C Day To Day - Undisclosed
- Duchene C Day To Day - Upper Body
- Benn LW Out - Lung
- Lundkvist D Out - Lower Body
Capitals versus Stars Picks and Prediction
Money Line Pick For Capitals vs Stars
- Capitals Money Line (+116) (4 units)
The Capitals had a 3-1-1 record as underdogs against the Central Division on the road in 2024-25. While Dallas has done well in the past against the Capitals, this season the Stars are struggling to produce goals with their poor shooting. Add on top of this their injuries to key goal scorers, and we can expect little success for the Stars. Even if Jake Oettinger is able to post an impressive save percentage like he has in his career against Washington, the Capitals are putting a lot of shots on net; the volume alone should get us the goals they need to grab a win over Dallas on the road.
Over/Under Pick for Capitals vs. Stars
- Under 5.5 (+108) ( 5 units)
The Stars had an over/under record of 3-5 as favorites against the Metropolitan Division at home in 2024-25. The Capitals have an over/under record of 3-7 in their last ten games against the Stars. Dallas should be capable of stopping the Capitals' already average offense, especially with Jake Oettinger in net, who has allowed few goals in his career against Washington. The Stars however, have also struggled with scoring and relied more on their goaltending to grab wins. With two defensive teams clashing, I have to look toward the under in this one.
