pirates vs. orioles prediction

On Tuesday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles clash in the first game of a three-game series at Camden Yards, and we will set you up with a Pirates vs. Orioles prediction to go along with free picks and a look at the game. Mike Burrows will pitch for the Pirates while Kyle Bradish (3.60 ERA) throws for Baltimore. Read on for a prediction on the score and a game breakdown.

Burrows Makes 17th Start

Mike Burrows will take the mound in the first game of this series against the Orioles. In an effort to keep Burrows' workload light down the stretch, the Pirates pitched him in relief for his last two appearances, but the right-hander will head back into the rotation this week as Pittsburgh opens a three-game set in Baltimore.

  • Even though he is starting again, Burrows is still likely to be subject to an unspecified innings and/or pitch limit, making it difficult to count on him pitching long enough to be a relevant factor in this game.
  • In his most recent appearance this past Wednesday against the Dodgers, Burrows had pitched with Braxton Ashcraft, but the two pitchers could switch roles on Tuesday. Ashcraft isn't listed as a starter for the series in Baltimore, so he will presumably be available to work behind Burrows.
  • He has a 4.08 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 81 total frames this season.

At 64-80, the perennially rebuilding Pirates are in last place in the National League Central. They have been abysmal on the road this season. Entering this series against the Orioles, they are 22-47 away from PNC Park.

Bradish Will Pitch Game One

The Orioles will start right-hander Kyle Bradish in the first game of this series. He completed four innings in a no-decision against San Diego on Monday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters.

  • Bradish wasn't nearly as effective as in his season debut last Tuesday, when he struck out 10 over six innings.
  • On Monday, the right-hander needed 84 pitches to get through just four innings, though he did finish strongly by retiring the final seven batters he faced. Bradish also struck out five batters and has now racked up 15 strikeouts over 10 innings across his two starts.
  • The 28-year-old righty was lifted early after throwing 51 strikes among his 84 pitches. He’s in line to face the Pirates next Tuesday as Baltimore transitions to a six-man rotation for the final month. He's lined up to make his next appearance here at home against Pittsburgh.

In what has been a tumultuous season for the Orioles, they come into this game against the Pirates in last place in an extremely competitive American League East. They had a poor August, with a team OPS of .668.

Pirates vs. Orioles Pick

Spread Pick for Pirates vs. Orioles

  • Baltimore Orioles -1.5 (4 UNITS)

Pittsburgh has been going through the motions for the last two months, as they are well out of the playoffs. Same story for the Orioles, but they boast a lot of talent on their roster, and they have underachieved this season. Kyle Bradish has been absent all year, but he will make his third start of the year against a Pirates offense 30th in slugging. They have been brutal on the road this season. Entering this series against the Orioles, they are 22-47 away from PNC Park. Baltimore has won 11 of 13 against them. Pittsburgh is impossible to trust on the road, so take the Os by two or more.

Over/Under Pick for Pirates vs. Orioles

  • UNDER (5 UNITS)

Baltimore has fared a lot better facing left-handed pitching this season, with an OPS nearly 50 points higher. Burrows will start this game and piggyback with Graham Ashcroft, two right-handed pitchers. I expect both clubs to struggle to generate any consistency in this game. Over their last 10 matchups, neither team has averaged more than 3.50 runs per game. The total has gone under in four of Pittsburgh’s last five road games. I like the under here with confidence.
