Brentford vs Sunderland Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 5 2026

Brentford hosts Sunderland at the Gtech Community Stadium in London, England, on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 AM ET, with both clubs entering the third match of their Premier League campaigns. Brentford is 1-1-0 with four points after an unbeaten opening two matches, while Sunderland is 1-0-1 with three points. The current betting market has Brentford around -170 on the moneyline, Sunderland +450 and the draw +300. The total is 2.5 goals, with the Over priced around -125 and the Under +100.

There is already some early-season intrigue surrounding this matchup. Brentford opened the campaign with an impressive 3-0 home victory against Tottenham before earning a 1-1 draw at Leeds. Sunderland lost 2-1 at Ipswich in its opener but responded by beating Fulham 1-0 at the Stadium of Light. That gives both clubs something positive to build from entering Saturday's meeting. Brentford Has Started the Season Strongly

Brentford has taken four of a possible six Premier League points, and the Bees have already shown why they could be difficult to beat at the Gtech Community Stadium. Their season began with an emphatic 3-0 victory against Tottenham, immediately providing one of the more impressive results from the opening weekend. Brentford then traveled to Elland Road and earned a 1-1 draw against Leeds, leaving the Bees unbeaten through two league matches.

The performance at Leeds was not quite as dominant as the Tottenham victory, but Brentford again showed its ability to make life uncomfortable for opponents. The Bees took the lead during the first half before Leeds improved after halftime and eventually found the equalizer. Brentford nevertheless escaped a difficult road environment with a point and now returns home, where its first Premier League performance produced three goals and a clean sheet.

Brentford's overall form extends beyond the Premier League. The Bees also hammered Birmingham City 6-1 in the Carabao Cup between their first two league matches. That means Brentford has scored 10 goals across its opening three competitive fixtures while conceding only twice. Sunderland should provide resistance, but Brentford has been the more consistently dangerous attacking side during the opening weeks.

Sunderland Showing Early Defensive Promise

Sunderland's return to the Premier League has produced one victory and one defeat. The Black Cats opened with a 2-1 road loss against Ipswich before responding with a 1-0 home victory over Fulham. Three points from the opening two matches represents a respectable beginning, particularly after Sunderland demonstrated that it could rebound immediately from the disappointment of its opening defeat.

The Fulham victory was built more around defensive resistance than sustained attacking pressure. Fulham controlled much of the possession but failed to register a shot on target, while Sunderland remained patient before eventually producing the decisive goal during the second half. That ability to remain organized without the ball could be particularly important against a Brentford team that has started the campaign with plenty of attacking confidence.

The bigger concern is what happens when Sunderland has to chase the game. Brentford has already scored three times against Tottenham and six times against Birmingham City, while Sunderland surrendered twice in its only road Premier League appearance. The Black Cats have shown enough defensively to prevent this from being considered an automatic blowout, but another road assignment against an unbeaten Brentford side represents a significant step up.

Brentford vs Sunderland Picks and Prediction

Pick: Brentford Moneyline (-170)

The Brentford Moneyline is my preferred side. The -170 price is not particularly cheap, but Brentford has provided the stronger early-season body of work. The Bees dismantled Tottenham 3-0 at this venue, earned a road point against Leeds and also produced six goals in their Carabao Cup victory. Sunderland deserves credit for responding to its opening loss with a clean-sheet victory, but its only road Premier League appearance resulted in a 2-1 defeat. Brentford's home advantage and stronger attacking form make the Bees the better side of this matchup, and Brentford -170 is the pick.

Pick: Under 2.5 Goals (+100)

I'm going against the slightly juiced Over and taking Under 2.5 goals at +100. Brentford's recent scoring numbers make the Over tempting, but Sunderland's victory against Fulham showed how the Black Cats may approach difficult Premier League matches. They were willing to defend for extended periods and make the game uncomfortable rather than turn it into an end-to-end contest. Brentford also showed at Leeds that its matches will not automatically become shootouts. With Sunderland likely to prioritize defensive organization away from home, something in the neighborhood of 1-0 or 2-0 looks more attractive than laying -125 with the Over.

Final Picks: Brentford Moneyline (-170) and Under 2.5 Goals (+100)
