St. Louis Cardinals vs Seattle Mariners Pick and Prediction September 9th, 2025
Two teams desperate to keep themselves solidified in their playoff hunt will go head-to-head when the Cardinals face the Mariners on Tuesday night at 9:40 p.m. EST in T-Mobile Park. Check out our St. Louis Cardinals vs Seattle Mariners pick and prediction here!
St. Louis is currently at 4th place in the NL Central with a 72-73 record, but they are only four games out of a playoff spot. They are 6-4 in their last ten, but they will need to leapfrog four different teams to get into the playoffs. Meanwhile, Seattle has a 76-68 record, good for the final wild card spot in the AL. It certainly helps that they've won three in a row when they desperately needed wins. Texas and Cleveland are 1.5 and 2.5 games behind, respectively. Seattle is a -210 money line favorite while the total is set at 7.5 runs. Can the Cardinals make things interesting with a win on the road?

Cardinals Need a Crazy Run
The Cardinals couldn't come up with a win in their most recent contest, losing by a score of 4-2. Alec Burleson had a homer and two RBI, but that was the only offensive output they could come up with. Ivan Herrera was the only one to get on base multiple times with a hit and a walk, but nobody from 4-9 in the batting order got on base all game. Miles Mikolas had a decent start with two runs surrendered in five innings pitched, but the bullpen behind him did not keep the runs for Miami at only two.
St. Louis didn't make many moves during the trade deadline, but based on the moves they made, they could be considered sellers. In their first transaction, Erick Fedde and cash were sent to the Braves for future considerations. Ryan Helsley was then traded to the Mets for Jesus Baez, Frank Elissalt and Nate Dohm. On the final day of the trading deadline, Phil Maton was shipped to Texas for Mason Molina, Skylar Hales, future considerations, and international bonus pool money. Steven Matz was also traded to Boston for Blaze Jordan. While the moves might seem small right now, it has the potential to grow into something great with the returns they got on their players.
Matthew Liberatore will take the hill as the starter for the Cardinals. While his numbers are better than his career averages, it is not something to be impressed by. As it stands, the lefty has a 4.15 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. Through 26 starts and 136.2 innings, Liberatore has 109 strikeouts. Liberatore started out pretty strong, but hasn't had an ERA under 5.00 through the months of June-August.

Seattle Needs More of the Same
Seattle earned a crucial 4-2 victory in their latest performance. Josh Naylor had a team-high two RBI on the day while Julio Rodriguez and Jorge Polanco each contributed an RBI in the effort. Randy Arozarena and Rodriguez were the only players with multiple hits on the day. Bryan Woo had six efficient innings, giving up only two runs and three hits while striking out nine and walking none.
The Mariners made a few key moves to boost their offensive production at the trade deadline, along with a few minor moves. The first trade Seattle made in July was sending Julio E. Rodriguez (not the one you're thinking of) to the Royals for cash. They then traded Brandyn Garcia and Ashton Izzi for Josh Naylor. Jeter Martinez was sent to the Pirates for Caleb Ferguson and on the final day of the trade deadline, Seattle traded with Arizona again to get Eugenio Suarez. In exchange, Seattle sent Tyler Locklear, Hunter Cranton, and Juan Burgos. Seattle has never been known for their offensive production, but they are hoping these moves work out for a solid lineup should they reach October baseball.
George Kirby will hope to keep the momentum going as the starter here. Overall, Kirby has a 4.47 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP, well above his career averages. Through 19 starts and 104.2 innings pitched, the righty has an 8-7 record with 104 strikeouts. While he had two ugly starts in May to start off his year terribly, he settled down in June with a 3.18. His July and August were solid as well, but the less we can say about his first start in September the better.

Spread Pick for Cardinals vs Mariners Pick
- Seattle Mariners Money Line (4 units)
Kirby hasn't exactly been the consistency model this year, but I trust him well enough to get a win for Seattle here. He has three of his last five starts giving up two runs or less and he performed well facing the Cardinals in his only start against them. Meanwhile, Liberatore has been quite consistent, but that might not be a great thing. He has surrendered 3+ runs and lasted only 5.1 innings or less in each of his last five starts. St. Louis is 31-39 on the road while Seattle is 42-27 at home as well.
Over/Under Pick for Cardinals vs Mariners
- Over 7.5 (4 units)
I believe both pitchers will give up 3+ runs in their respective outings, with the bullpens giving up at least 1-2 runs to reach the over total. Seattle and St. Louis have hit the over in the majority of their contests this season, and while Liberatore has given up 3+ runs in four of his last five starts, Kirby is a wild card. With all the talent on the offensive end Seattle acquired at the trade deadline, I expect them to score more than three runs. After that, St. Louis should hit enough to get to the over.
