Cleveland is now fighting for supremacy in the AL Central as they face the Texas Rangers on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. EST in Progressive Field. Check out our Texas Rangers vs Cleveland Guardians pick and prediction here!

Texas currently has an 81-79 record, but they are five games behind the Tigers for the final wild card spot, meaning that they will not be reaching the playoffs this year. However, they will want to finish the season above .500 to have some pride. Meanwhile, the Guardians are tied with the Tigers with an 86-74 record. With only two games to decide who will receive the division crown, losing is basically not an option at this point. Cleveland is currently favored at a -140 money line while the total is set at an even seven runs. Can the Guardians complete the comeback and steal the AL Central division?

Texas Trying to Go Above .500

The Rangers lost defeated the Guardians in their most recent contest by a score of 7-3. Alejandro Osuna had a homer with three RBI and Cody Freeman added a pair of RBI. Rowdy Tellez and Jake Burger also chipped in an RBI each. Jack Leiter went seven innings as the starter and gave up two earned runs, striking out ten and walking one.

Texas started out their trade deadline by sending Dane Dunning to the Braves for Jose Ruiz and cash. The Rangers then acquired Merill Kelly from the Diamondbacks for Mitch Bratt, David Hagaman, and Kohl Drake. Phil Maton was sent from St. Louis to Texas as well for Mason Molina, Skylar Hayes, future considerations, and international bonus money. Codi Heuer was sent to Detroit for cash and Danny Coulombe was acquired from Minnesota for Garrett Horn as well. Unfortunately, these moves didn't help Texas get a postseason spot, so it's back to the drawing board.

Jacob Latz will be taking the ball for the Rangers as the starter in this one. Latz has been doing well as of late with a 2.16 ERA across his last five starts, giving up no more than two earned runs in each of those starts. He will need to increase his inning count, as he has yet to go 6+ innings in any of those starts. Corey Seager and Nathan Eovaldi highlight the list of eleven players on the injured list. It makes no sense to bring them back with nothing to play for, so Texas will be at a slight disadvantage with that.

Cleveland Clinging to Hope

Cleveland fell to the Rangers by a score of 7-3 in their latest outing. Kyle Manzardo had a homer with two RBI and Gabriel Arias added the only other RBI for the Guardians. He was also the only one to have multiple hits on the day. Slade Cecconi went four innings as the starter and gave up four runs. The bullpen collapsed later on in the game, but it was essentially over at that point.

In typical Cleveland fashion, the Guardians made only quiet moves. In fact, Cleveland didn't do much at the deadline, trading Shane Bieber to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Khal Stephen on the deadline day. They also sent Paul Sewald to the Tigers for future considerations. Most of Cleveland's roster is under contract for not only the remainder of this year, but next year as well. The offseason might be a bit more exciting for the Guardians, but they should feel happy still in the hunt at this point.

Joey Cantillo will get the start in a crucial game for the Guardians. The lefty has a 5-3 record with a 3.21 ERA in 33 appearances (12 starts). Through 89.2 innings pitched, he has 100 strikeouts and a 1.30 WHIP. His September has been phenomenal with a 1.16 ERA. Similar to Latz, Cantillo has given up no more than one earned run across each of his last five starts, but he has yet to go at least six innings in any of those starts. Nine players are on Cleveland's injured list. David Fry, Lane Thomas, and Nolan Jones are the ones to watch, as they are on the ten-day IL and may be needed for the playoffs.

Rangers vs Guardians Pick

Spread Pick for Rangers vs Guardians

  • Guardians Money Line (4 units)

Cleveland has much more motivation to win this game and Cleveland is overdue to win against Texas. They have lost their last four in a row to Texas and the Rangers are 33-46 on the road this season. Cleveland is 43-36 at home and they are 7-3 across their last ten games overall. I trust Cleveland's bullpen more than I do the bullpen of the Rangers, as that has been a source of their strength for many years. Texas has lost eight of their last ten games and clearly has given up. The win yesterday should be considered more of an outlier than anything else, and it's hard to go against Cantillo right now.

Over/Under Pick for White Sox vs Guardians

  • Under 7 Runs (4 units)

Both pitchers are throwing incredibly well right now, but neither are going that far into games. However, I trust the bullpen of the Guardians to lock it down after Cantillo throws around five innings. Both teams have hit the under in the majority of their contests and Cleveland averages less than four runs per game. Texas is 6-2 on the under in their last six and with Seager and Semien in their lineup, it creates a void of offensive production in the heart of their lineup. Cleveland has gone 7-2-1 on the under in their last ten and with the division on the line, Cleveland will resort to playing their way through pitching, defense, and clutch hitting.
