Dream Carry the Better Form Into Phoenix

Atlanta has been one of the stronger teams in the league this season and enters this matchup having won four of its last five games. The Dream are coming off an impressive 124-88 road win over Los Angeles and also beat Las Vegas 97-82 earlier in the week. Their only loss during the current five-game stretch came in overtime against Indiana, 95-91.

Atlanta's offensive production has been a major reason for its success. The Dream average 91.2 points per game while shooting 44% from the floor. They also average 35.3 rebounds, 21.1 assists and 9.1 steals per game. Defensively, Atlanta allows 85.7 points per contest, giving the Dream a healthy positive scoring differential.

The recent scoring numbers are difficult to ignore. Atlanta has scored 97 or more points in four of its last five games and has already beaten Phoenix twice this season. The Dream won the first meeting 82-80 and then delivered a much stronger performance in the second matchup, winning 96-82. Atlanta's ability to create extra possessions and consistently push into the 90s gives it a clear statistical advantage here.

Mercury Face Another Difficult Matchup

Phoenix enters at 13-23 and has struggled badly at home, where it owns a 5-11 record. The Mercury have lost four of their last five games, including an 88-85 home defeat against Portland. Their only victory during that stretch came against Los Angeles, 94-87.

The Mercury average 83.9 points per game while allowing 87.4. Phoenix shoots 44% from the field, matching Atlanta's percentage, but the Dream have the stronger numbers in rebounds, assists, steals and overall scoring. Phoenix averages 31.6 rebounds, 19.9 assists and 7.3 steals per game.

The matchup becomes even more difficult with Phoenix missing one of its backcourt pieces. The Mercury have already failed to slow Atlanta twice this season, and the Dream have been playing at an even higher offensive level recently. Phoenix will need its best defensive performance of the month to keep this game within one or two possessions.

Atlanta Dream vs Phoenix Mercury Picks and Prediction

Pick: Atlanta Dream -5.5

Atlanta is the stronger side and is playing substantially better basketball entering Saturday night. The Dream have won four of five, including dominant victories over Los Angeles and Connecticut, and they have already defeated Phoenix twice this season. Atlanta also holds a sizable scoring advantage, averaging 91.2 points compared with Phoenix's 83.9.

Phoenix's 5-11 home record doesn't provide much reason to expect a major reversal, especially against a Dream team that is 11-7 on the road. Atlanta has been creating more offense, rebounding better and generating more steals. Laying 5.5 points is reasonable in a matchup where the Dream have the clearer edge on both ends of the floor.

Pick: Over 176.5

The total is high, but Atlanta's recent offensive pace makes the over attractive. The Dream have scored 124, 97, 91, 104 and 107 points over their last five games, an average of 104.6 points per contest. Phoenix has also allowed at least 88 points in three of its last five.

Atlanta's season average of 91.2 points already puts the Dream in position to do much of the work toward this number. Phoenix averages 83.9 points itself, and the first two meetings between these teams produced totals of 162 and 178 points. With Atlanta playing much more aggressively on offense now than earlier in the year, another game pushing into the upper 170s or low 180s is very realistic. Take the Over 176.5.
