Sky Trying to End Two-Game Slide

Chicago enters Saturday having lost two consecutive games, dropping an 87-81 decision on the road before suffering a 113-90 home loss. Before those defeats, however, the Sky had won three straight, including a 93-86 victory over New York on August 18. Chicago also recorded victories of 73-70 and 82-80 during that stretch, leaving the Sky 3-2 over their last five games.

Kamilla Cardoso has been Chicago's leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 14.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game while shooting 54.8% from the field. Chicago has averaged 87.2 points per game as a team while allowing 89.8. The Sky shoot 44% from the field, average 33.4 rebounds and distribute 21.5 assists per game. They also average 7.1 steals and 4.7 blocks.

The defensive numbers are the primary concern for Chicago against New York. The Sky are allowing nearly 90 points per game, and their last five contests have produced combined totals of 168, 203, 143, 179 and 162 points. Chicago's road record is another concern at just 5-14. Still, the Sky have already demonstrated that they can compete with New York this season. The Liberty lead the season series only 2-1, and the first two meetings were decided by one point before Chicago won the third by seven.

Liberty Looking for a Bounce-Back Performance

New York enters Saturday at 23-16 and has been significantly stronger at Barclays Center, where it owns a 13-6 home record. The Liberty are 3-2 over their last five games, but they are coming off a disappointing 79-60 home loss. New York had previously defeated Indiana 109-102 after losing 93-86 at Chicago. Its other two games during the stretch resulted in victories of 82-75 and 85-81.

Breanna Stewart leads New York in scoring at 20.6 points per game while shooting 46.7% from the field. Jonquel Jones leads the Liberty on the glass at 9.1 rebounds per game, while Pauline Astier averages a team-high 3.4 assists. As a team, New York averages 89.9 points while allowing 87.4, giving the Liberty a positive scoring differential compared with Chicago's negative differential.

New York also owns several important statistical advantages. The Liberty shoot 46% from the field compared with Chicago's 44% and average 35.1 rebounds compared with the Sky's 33.4. New York has the superior scoring offense and allows 2.4 fewer points per game. Those advantages, combined with a 13-6 home record, help explain why the Liberty are substantial favorites.

The season series deserves attention before laying a large spread. New York won the first meeting 96-95 in Chicago and the second 95-94 at Barclays Center. Chicago then turned the tables with a 93-86 victory on August 18. New York therefore leads the series 2-1, but the Liberty have not defeated Chicago by more than one point in either of their victories.

Chicago Sky vs New York Liberty Picks and Prediction

Pick: Chicago Sky +8.5 (-105)

New York should have the advantage at home, but Chicago +8.5 at -105 provides better betting value than laying more than eight points with the Liberty. All three meetings this season have finished within this number, with New York winning twice by one point and Chicago winning the most recent meeting by seven. The Liberty are also coming off a 19-point home defeat and have won only one of their last three games. Chicago's 5-14 road record makes the Sky difficult to trust outright, but that's reflected in the +300 moneyline. With the head-to-head results showing an extremely competitive matchup, taking more than eight points is the stronger side.

Pick: Under 178.5 (-105)

The Under 178.5 at -105 is the preferred total. The three meetings between these teams have produced 191, 189 and 179 combined points, so this number is admittedly lower than each previous matchup. However, both teams have recently played several lower-scoring games. Chicago's last five have included totals of 168, 143 and 162, while New York's last five include totals of 139, 157 and 166. The Liberty are coming off a game in which they scored only 60 points, and Chicago has been held to 81 or fewer in three of its last five. With 178.5 sitting close to the most recent head-to-head result and both teams showing recent offensive inconsistency, the Under gets the slight edge.
