Las Vegas Brings Its Efficient Offence to Indianapolis

Las Vegas enters this matchup with a 21-9 overall record, including an impressive 12-4 mark away from home. The Aces have won three of their last five games, earning victories against Atlanta, New York and Portland while losing to Chicago and Washington. Las Vegas is coming off a convincing road victory and remains one of the leading contenders in the Western Conference.

The Aces are averaging 92.0 points, 33.9 rebounds and 22.5 assists per game across the full season. They are shooting 49.6% from the field and 36.2% from three-point range while allowing 86.6 points per contest. Opponents have made only 43.9% of their field-goal attempts against Las Vegas, giving the Aces one of the more balanced statistical profiles in the league. They have produced an average scoring margin of plus-5.4 points per game.

Efficiency is the defining strength of this Las Vegas team. The Aces do not need an unusually fast pace or a dominant offensive-rebounding performance to score consistently because they convert such a high percentage of their opportunities. However, their 7.3 offensive rebounds per game leave them with less margin for error when the initial shots are not falling. Protecting the basketball and making Indiana defend for the entire possession will be critical in this matchup.

Indiana Looks to Protect Its Home Court

Indiana comes into Thursday’s game at 19-11 overall and 11-5 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Fever have won four of their last five contests, with victories over Portland, Seattle, Connecticut and New York before losing at Minnesota. They have played some of their most productive basketball of the season during this stretch and now return home following a three-game road trip.

The Fever lead the WNBA with 96.5 points per game while averaging 33.5 rebounds and 20.9 assists. Indiana is shooting an excellent 48.5% from the field, 38.7% from beyond the arc and 83.0% at the free-throw line. The Fever are allowing 90.7 points per game and permitting opponents to shoot 46.5% from the field. They also average 15.2 turnovers per contest, which is one area Las Vegas could potentially exploit.

Indiana’s combination of perimeter shooting and free-throw accuracy makes this offence particularly difficult to contain. The Fever can create separation quickly when their outside shots are falling, but the defensive numbers are less convincing. Indiana has a season scoring margin of plus-5.8 points, although allowing more than 90 points per game increases the pressure on its offence to remain efficient. The Fever must also avoid giving Las Vegas additional possessions through turnovers.

Las Vegas Aces vs Indiana Fever Pick and Prediction

  • ATS Pick: Indiana Fever -1.5

I am taking Indiana to cover the short spread at home. The Fever possess the league’s highest-scoring offence, have won four of their last five games and are 11-5 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Las Vegas owns the stronger defensive statistics and an excellent road record, but Indiana’s shooting percentages give the home team a meaningful advantage in what should be a tightly contested game.

The Fever are shooting 38.7% from three-point range and 83.0% at the foul line for the season. Those numbers are especially valuable when laying only 1.5 points because Indiana has multiple ways to generate efficient scoring. Las Vegas should remain competitive, but I expect the Fever’s offensive production and home-court advantage to carry them to a narrow victory.

  • Total Pick: Under 194.5

I am also taking the under at 194.5 points. Indiana and Las Vegas combine to average 188.5 points per game, leaving six points of separation between their season scoring production and the posted total. Indiana’s defensive average creates some concern, but Las Vegas allows only 86.6 points per game and holds opponents to 43.9% shooting.

For this game to reach 195 points, both offences would probably need to perform above their full-season scoring averages. Las Vegas has the defensive efficiency to prevent Indiana from completely dictating the contest, while the Aces’ lower possession-based approach should help keep the total manageable. My preferred wager is Indiana -1.5, with the under serving as the secondary play.

Prediction: Indiana Fever 96, Las Vegas Aces 91
