Los Angeles Faces a Difficult Road Assignment

Los Angeles enters this matchup with an 11-17 overall record, including a 6-8 mark on the road. The Sparks have gone 1-4 across their last five completed games, with their lone victory coming against Portland. Their four losses during that span came against New York, Phoenix, Dallas, and Chicago. Los Angeles was also scheduled to play Chicago on Wednesday night, meaning the Sparks will arrive in Minnesota without a rest day.

The Sparks are averaging 89.6 points, 30.9 rebounds, and 21.8 assists per game across the full season. Los Angeles is shooting approximately 46% from the field and 33% from 3-point range. The Sparks have been considerably less effective defensively, allowing 94.3 points per contest. Their scoring numbers are competitive, but the team’s minus-4.7 average scoring margin helps explain its position below .500.

Rebounding is one of the most significant season-long concerns for Los Angeles. The Sparks rank near the bottom of the league in that category, limiting their ability to create second-chance opportunities or prevent opponents from extending possessions. They will need to shoot efficiently because Minnesota’s defense does not regularly concede easy scoring chances. Playing on consecutive nights against the league’s top team makes that challenge even more difficult.

Minnesota Continues to Set the WNBA Standard

Minnesota comes into Thursday’s contest with a league-best 25-6 overall record and a 12-4 record at Target Center. The Lynx have won each of their last five games, defeating Seattle twice, Toronto twice, and Indiana. Minnesota has scored at least 100 points in four of those five victories, although only the team’s win-loss record from that stretch is being used here rather than short-term statistical averages.

The Lynx are producing 92.7 points and 35.3 rebounds per game for the full season. Minnesota is shooting 48.4% from the field and 39.1% from beyond the arc, displaying excellent efficiency at every level of the floor. The Lynx are allowing only 83.4 points per game and holding opponents to approximately 42.8% shooting. Those figures give Minnesota an average scoring margin of plus-9.3 points per contest.

Minnesota’s ability to combine efficient offense with dependable defense separates it from most of the league. The Lynx can score at a high level without sacrificing defensive discipline, and their rebounding advantage should generate additional possessions against Los Angeles. Minnesota has already defeated the Sparks twice this season, winning 99-83 in Los Angeles and 96-87 at Target Center.

Los Angeles Sparks vs Minnesota Lynx Pick and Prediction

  • ATS Pick: Minnesota Lynx -10.5

I am taking Minnesota if the spread is released at -10.5 or better. The Lynx hold substantial advantages in record, rest, rebounding, shooting efficiency, and points allowed. Minnesota has won five consecutive games, while Los Angeles will be playing the second half of a back-to-back after facing Chicago on Wednesday night.

The Sparks have enough offensive ability to remain competitive for portions of the game, but their defensive and rebounding numbers create a difficult matchup. Los Angeles is allowing 94.3 points per game, while Minnesota is scoring 92.7 and shooting better than 48% from the field. The Lynx have won both previous meetings by at least nine points, and the scheduling situation makes another comfortable Minnesota victory the most likely result.

  • Total Pick: Over 181.5

I am taking the over if the total is set at 181.5. The two teams combine to average 182.3 points per game, while Los Angeles allows more than 94 points per contest. Minnesota’s offensive efficiency should give the Lynx an opportunity to approach or exceed their season scoring average against a vulnerable Sparks defense.

Minnesota’s defensive numbers are excellent, but Los Angeles still averages nearly 90 points per game and shoots efficiently from the field. The Lynx may not need the Sparks to reach their full-season average for this total to clear. A Minnesota score near 100, combined with approximately 83 to 86 points from Los Angeles, would be sufficient. My preferred wager is Minnesota against the spread, with the over as the secondary selection.

Prediction: Minnesota Lynx 101, Los Angeles Sparks 85
