Portland Looks to Build on Its Latest Road Victory

Portland enters Tuesday’s matchup with a 10-13 overall record and a 4-7 record away from home. The Fire have won two of their last five games, including a recent 102-92 road victory over Atlanta and a 77-72 road win over Seattle. Portland recently lost 88-80 at home against Las Vegas, fell 124-123 in four overtimes on the road against Washington and suffered a 124-94 road defeat against Chicago. Although the Fire have lost more often than they have won this season, both of their victories during the last five games came away from home.

The Fire are averaging 84.9 points per game while allowing 91.2 points per contest. Portland is shooting 44% from the field and averaging 29.7 rebounds, 20.3 assists, 4.2 blocks and 7.4 steals per game. The scoring production is slightly higher than Connecticut’s, and Portland also holds an advantage in assists. However, the Fire enter this matchup with lower averages in rebounds, blocks and steals than the Sun.

Portland’s clearest strength is its ability to score, particularly when compared with Connecticut’s season average. The Fire are producing 5.6 more points per game than the Sun and have reached at least 94 points in three of their last five contests. That stretch included 102 points in the recent win over Atlanta and 123 points in the four-overtime loss to Washington. The primary concern is Portland’s defensive average of 91.2 points allowed per game. The Fire have surrendered at least 88 points in three of their last five games, leaving the offense with a considerable scoring requirement.

Connecticut Tries to Stop Its Home Slide

Connecticut comes into the game at 5-18 overall and 3-10 at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Sun have divided their last five games with two victories and three losses, but they have dropped their last two contests. Connecticut recently lost 79-64 at home against Golden State after an 86-80 home loss to Minnesota. Before those defeats, the Sun earned a 90-89 road victory over Minnesota. Connecticut also recently lost 86-83 at home against Dallas and recorded a 68-57 home win over Washington.

The Sun are averaging 79.3 points per game and allowing 86.3 points per contest. Connecticut is shooting 43% from the field while averaging 33.3 rebounds, 18.8 assists, 4.6 blocks and 8.5 steals. The Sun trail Portland in scoring, field-goal percentage and assists, but they hold the advantage in rebounding, blocks and steals. Connecticut also allows 4.9 fewer points per game than Portland.

Connecticut’s most notable statistical strength is its ability to produce defensive activity. The Sun average 8.5 steals and 4.6 blocks per game, exceeding Portland in both categories. Connecticut also averages 3.6 more rebounds per contest, which could help the home team limit additional opportunities. The weakness is a scoring average that has fallen below Portland’s production. The Sun have scored 80 points or fewer in three of their last five games, including only 64 points in their most recent loss. Connecticut will need to turn its rebounding and defensive advantages into enough scoring opportunities to keep pace with the Fire.

Portland Fire vs Connecticut Sun Picks and Prediction

Portland Fire vs Connecticut Sun Pick

  • Pick: Portland Fire -1.5

Portland is my selection to cover the 1.5-point spread. The Fire have the better overall record at 10-13, while Connecticut is 5-18. Portland also enters with an 84.9-point scoring average, which is 5.6 points higher than Connecticut’s 79.3-point average. The Fire have won two of their last three games, and both victories came on the road. Connecticut has lost three of its last four games and carries a 3-10 home record into Tuesday’s contest. The ESPN matchup predictor gives Connecticut a 57.4% chance of winning, but Portland’s superior scoring average, stronger overall record and recent road victories make the Fire the preferred spread pick.

Portland Fire vs Connecticut Sun Total Pick

  • Pick: Over 166.5

I am taking Over 166.5 in this matchup. Portland is averaging 84.9 points and allowing 91.2 points per game, while Connecticut is scoring 79.3 and surrendering 86.3. Portland’s last five games have produced combined totals of 194, 168, 149, 247 and 218 points. Connecticut’s last five have finished with 143, 166, 179, 169 and 125 combined points. The Fire have been involved in several high-scoring games recently, and their defensive average leaves room for Connecticut to improve upon its normal scoring production. With Portland also capable of reaching the mid-80s or higher, I see enough offensive potential for the two teams to move beyond the posted total.

Final Score Prediction: Portland Fire 87 – Connecticut Sun 82
