Toronto Tries to Stop a Five-Game Slide

Toronto enters Sunday with a 10-18 overall record and a 4-7 mark away from home. The Tempo have lost five consecutive games, falling 104-72 to Minnesota, 100-93 to Minnesota, 109-83 to Las Vegas, 111-92 to Atlanta and 79-62 to Washington. Four of those five losses came by at least 16 points, including three defeats by 26 points or more.

The Tempo are averaging 88.1 points per game, but their recent defensive performance has erased much of that offensive production. Over their last ten contests, Toronto has averaged 82.1 points, 29.7 rebounds, 20.1 assists, 5.3 steals and 2.6 blocks while shooting 45.5% from the field. Opponents have averaged 96.3 points during that stretch, contributing to Toronto’s 1-9 record.

Toronto must deliver a much sharper defensive performance to remain competitive against one of the league’s best teams. The Tempo have allowed at least 100 points in three of their last five games and previously lost 83-75 to Golden State on July 8. Toronto’s offense is capable of producing points, but its recent defensive numbers make it difficult to trust the road underdog against a Valkyries team that has consistently controlled opponents.

Golden State’s Defense Provides the Foundation

Golden State enters the matchup with a 19-9 overall record and an impressive 11-4 record at Chase Center. The Valkyries are 3-2 across their last five games, defeating Connecticut 79-64, Indiana 88-75 and Washington 74-69 before losing 90-82 to Washington and 91-89 to Phoenix. The latest defeat ended an otherwise strong stretch in which Golden State had won eight of ten games.

The Valkyries lead the league defensively, allowing only 76.9 points per game while holding opponents to 42.5% shooting. Over their last ten games, Golden State has averaged 79.9 points, 29.5 rebounds, 18.6 assists, 8.8 steals and 4.0 blocks while shooting 43.8% from the field. Opponents have averaged just 73.8 points during that span.

Golden State’s defensive advantage is especially important against a Toronto team that has struggled throughout its five-game losing streak. The Valkyries also average 10.6 made three-pointers per game, creating another potential source of separation. Golden State does not need an exceptionally efficient offensive performance to control this matchup. If the Valkyries defend near their normal standard, Toronto may struggle to produce enough points to remain within the spread.

Toronto Tempo vs Golden State Valkyries Pick and Prediction

ATS Pick:

  • Golden State Valkyries -11.5

I am laying the 11.5 points with Golden State. The number is substantial, but the contrast in recent form supports the home favorite. Golden State has won eight of its last ten games, while Toronto has dropped nine of ten and enters Sunday riding a five-game losing streak.

Toronto has lost four of its last five games by at least 16 points. The Tempo’s defense has allowed 96.3 points per game over the last ten, while Golden State has held opponents to only 73.8. The Valkyries also own an 11-4 home record and already defeated Toronto earlier this season. Those advantages give Golden State a clear path to winning by a comfortable margin.

Total Pick:

  • Under 167.5

I prefer the under at 167.5. Toronto’s defensive struggles create some concern, but Golden State’s style remains built around controlling games defensively. The Valkyries have allowed only 76.9 points per game this season and 73.8 across their last ten contests.

The first meeting between these teams produced only 158 combined points, with Golden State earning an 83-75 victory. The Valkyries should dictate the tempo again at home, and Toronto may have difficulty reaching its season scoring average against the league’s top defense. I would play Under 167.5 but become more cautious if the total falls below 165.

Prediction: Golden State Valkyries 86, Toronto Tempo 72
