Toronto Tries to End Its Extended Slide

Toronto enters Thursday’s matchup with a 10-20 overall record and a 4-9 mark away from home. The Tempo have lost all five of their most recent games, falling twice to Golden State, twice to Minnesota, and once to Las Vegas. Those results are part of an active seven-game losing streak that has pushed the expansion team further below .500.

The Tempo are averaging 87.5 points, 31.0 rebounds, and 20.1 assists per game across the full season. Toronto is shooting 45% from the field while allowing 93.6 points per contest. The Tempo also average 7.1 steals and 3.1 blocks. Their minus-6.1 average scoring margin reflects a defense that has struggled to provide sufficient support for an offense producing a respectable amount of scoring.

Toronto’s best path to ending its losing streak will be improving its defensive execution against another team with a losing record. The Tempo have enough offensive production to compete in this matchup, but allowing nearly 94 points per game has consistently placed pressure on them to win high-scoring contests. Toronto must also make its modest rebounding advantage count by limiting Portland’s second opportunities.

Portland Returns Home Looking for a Response

Portland comes into this game with an 11-19 overall record, including a 6-9 record at Moda Center. The Fire have also lost five consecutive games, dropping contests against Minnesota, Dallas, Las Vegas, Indiana, and Los Angeles. Four of those five defeats came by eight points or fewer, but Portland has been unable to make the necessary plays to close out competitive games.

For the season, the Fire are averaging 86.2 points, 29.5 rebounds, and 20.6 assists per game. Portland is shooting 45% from the field and allowing 92.1 points per contest. The Fire are also producing 7.5 steals and 3.7 blocks per game. Portland’s average scoring margin is minus-5.9 points, which is only slightly better than Toronto’s season differential.

Portland has the defensive statistical advantage in this matchup, although allowing more than 92 points per game remains a serious concern. The Fire also average 1.5 fewer rebounds than Toronto, making it important that they protect the defensive glass. Portland defeated Toronto 99-80 in the first meeting of the season, demonstrating that its offense can find favorable opportunities against the Tempo defense.

Toronto Tempo vs Portland Fire Pick and Prediction

  • ATS Pick: Portland Fire -1.5

I am taking Portland to cover the short 1.5-point spread at home. These teams have nearly identical season scoring margins, and both enter the matchup on five-game losing streaks. However, the Fire have the better overall record, a slight defensive advantage, and home-court advantage at Moda Center.

Portland is allowing 1.5 fewer points per game than Toronto and averages slightly more assists, steals, and blocks. Those are not enormous statistical differences, but they matter in a matchup carrying such a small spread. The Fire also won the first meeting by 19 points. I do not expect another margin that large, but Portland should do enough offensively to earn a home victory and cover the number.

  • Total Pick: Under 186.5

I am taking the under at 186.5 points. Toronto and Portland combine to average 173.7 points per game across the full season, which places the posted total almost 13 points above their combined offensive production. Both defenses allow plenty of scoring, but the market appears to have adjusted aggressively for those weaknesses.

Toronto averages 87.5 points, while Portland produces 86.2 per game. Even if both teams surpass their season scoring averages, they could still remain below the posted number. The first meeting finished with 179 combined points, giving the under additional room at the current total. My preferred wager is Portland -1.5, with the under serving as the secondary play.

Prediction: Portland Fire 92, Toronto Tempo 88
