WNBA Picks for October 17, 2026
The WNBA Finals begin Saturday afternoon when the Atlanta Dream visit the Golden State Valkyries at Chase Center in San Francisco. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET, with NBC and Peacock carrying Game 1 of the best-of-seven championship series. Golden State finished the regular season 32-12, while Atlanta went 30-14. Both teams swept their semifinal opponents, and one of these franchises will win its first WNBA championship.
This is an interesting matchup because the Dream have been one of the league’s highest-scoring teams, while Golden State has built its success around defense. The Valkyries also won all three regular-season meetings, although Atlanta has improved since those games. Check out our free WNBA picks for more postseason predictions.
Atlanta Dream vs. Golden State Valkyries Best Bet
Atlanta comes into the Finals having won five consecutive playoff games. The Dream swept Washington in the opening round and New York in the semifinals, scoring 92, 101 and 85 points in their three victories over the Liberty. Atlanta averaged 91.3 points during the regular season and has increased that to 92.6 during the playoffs. The Dream have also been outstanding defensively, recording 10.4 steals per postseason game and turning opponents’ mistakes into easy scoring opportunities.
Golden State has been every bit as impressive, particularly defensively. The Valkyries finished the regular season with the league’s best defensive rating at 99.1 and have continued that strong play in the postseason. Golden State swept Las Vegas in the semifinals, holding the defending champions to 60, 81 and 77 points. The Valkyries also swept Atlanta during the regular season, winning 77-66, 78-75 and 88-83. The Dream averaged just 74.7 points in those three meetings, considerably below their season average.
Best Bet: Golden State Valkyries Moneyline
I’m backing Golden State to take Game 1 at home. The Valkyries have already demonstrated they can limit Atlanta’s offense, and their defensive performances against Las Vegas suggest that wasn’t simply a regular-season advantage. Golden State also has home-court advantage and has been particularly effective at forcing opponents into difficult shots. Atlanta’s offense has improved during the playoffs, but the Dream haven’t faced many defenses capable of applying this kind of pressure for an entire game.
The biggest concern is Atlanta’s ability to create extra possessions through offensive rebounding and turnovers. The Dream have been more productive offensively during the postseason and could make this considerably closer than the regular-season meetings suggest. Still, Golden State has the stronger defensive profile, won all three previous matchups and gets Game 1 at Chase Center. I’ll take the Valkyries to open the series with a victory, provided the moneyline isn’t excessively expensive.

WNBA Best Bet of the Day
With only one game on Saturday’s schedule, Golden State Valkyries Moneyline earns our WNBA Best Bet of the Day. Golden State has been the league’s most dependable defensive team, and the Valkyries held Atlanta well below its usual scoring average during their three regular-season meetings.
The Dream have been excellent during the playoffs, but Golden State’s defensive consistency and home-court advantage give the Valkyries the stronger matchup for Game 1.
