WNBA Picks for October 2, 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/01/2026, 01:25 AM ET

The first round of the WNBA playoffs comes down to one final game Friday as the Dallas Wings visit the Golden State Valkyries at Chase Center for a winner-take-all Game 3. The series has already delivered two completely different games, with Golden State dominating the opener before Dallas answered with an overtime victory in Game 2 to keep its season alive.

Golden State entered the postseason as the No. 2 seed after finishing 32-12, while seventh-seeded Dallas went 27-17 during a breakthrough season. The Valkyries swept all three regular-season meetings and then hammered the Wings 104-80 in Game 1, seemingly continuing their control of the matchup. Dallas completely changed the complexion of the series Wednesday night, however, surviving a back-and-forth Game 2 before pulling away in overtime for a 108-100 victory.

Dallas Wings vs. Golden State Valkyries Best Bet

Friday, October 2 — Chase Center, San Francisco, California

The easiest mistake to make with this matchup may be placing too much weight on whichever game happened most recently. Golden State looked overwhelmingly superior in Game 1, winning by 24 points and holding Dallas to 80. The Wings responded by scoring 108 in Game 2, but it required overtime and a record-setting individual scoring performance to get there. Golden State actually held a three-point lead with 15 seconds remaining in regulation before Dallas tied the game and eventually took control in overtime.

Looking beyond those two extremes points us back toward Golden State. The Valkyries didn't just beat Dallas once during the regular season. They went 3-0 against the Wings, winning 91-80, 94-76 and 78-70. Add the 104-80 Game 1 victory and Golden State has won four of five meetings this season, with three of those victories coming by double digits. Dallas deserves credit for extending the series, but one overtime win doesn't erase the broader matchup advantage Golden State has established.

Golden State's defense remains the most compelling part of the handicap. The Valkyries finished the regular season with the WNBA's top-ranked scoring defense, allowing only 75.1 points per game. That was particularly important against a Dallas offense that averaged 89.4 points overall. In the three regular-season meetings, Golden State held the Wings to only 75.3 points per game, more than 14 points below their season average.

Game 2 obviously broke that pattern, but Dallas needed an extraordinary offensive performance to do it. The Wings scored 96 points during regulation and another 12 in overtime after managing only 80 in Game 1. Expecting Dallas to reproduce that level of shot-making on the road against the league's best defense is a considerably different proposition.

Why Golden State Against the Spread Makes the Cut

The Game 3 spread is the market I want to attack, provided sportsbooks don't push Golden State too far.

Dallas demonstrated Wednesday that it can compete with the Valkyries, and that alone should prevent bettors from treating Game 3 like a replay of Golden State's 24-point Game 1 victory. The Wings now have confidence, and they have shown that they can create enough offense to force Golden State into a high-pressure fourth quarter. That makes laying an enormous number unattractive.

But the series is returning to Chase Center, where Golden State produced its most convincing performance of the matchup. The Valkyries also have the larger body of evidence on their side. Five meetings between these teams this season have produced four Golden State victories, and Dallas has reached 90 points only once against the Valkyries.

There is also a significant difference between asking Golden State to win Game 3 and asking Dallas to reproduce what happened Wednesday. The Wings needed overtime to survive despite scoring at an exceptional rate. Golden State was seconds away from ending the series in regulation even while allowing its highest point total to Dallas all season.

That makes the Valkyries my preferred side.

The price will determine whether it becomes an official wager. Golden State -5.5 or better would qualify as the Best Bet, while anything approaching -7 would significantly reduce the value. If sportsbooks open this game around the same general range as Game 2, the Valkyries are the team I want.

WNBA Best Bet: Golden State Valkyries -5.5 or better

One More Betting Angle to Watch

The total presents a fascinating handicap after the first two games produced completely different scoring environments. Game 1 finished with 184 combined points, while Game 2 reached 208 after overtime. Even before the extra period, the teams had combined for 196 points.

Those results make an automatic under difficult to justify, but Golden State's season-long profile still suggests caution before chasing another shootout. The Valkyries allowed only 75.1 points per game during the regular season, and they held Dallas to 80 or fewer in each of the first four meetings between these teams. Game 2 was the clear outlier.

That doesn't necessarily mean Dallas suddenly solved Golden State's defense permanently. The Wings produced an extraordinary offensive performance with their season on the line, and Golden State now gets the opportunity to adjust while returning home. Elimination-game pressure can also encourage both teams to shorten rotations and lean more heavily on their best defensive combinations.

If sportsbooks respond aggressively to Wednesday's 208-point final and push the Game 3 total into the 160s, the under becomes considerably more interesting. At a number closer to the mid-150s, however, there wouldn't be enough value to make it an official recommendation.

The spread remains the stronger angle.

Friday's WNBA Betting Verdict

Dallas deserves considerable respect for what it accomplished in Game 2. After losing all three regular-season meetings and getting blown out by 24 points in Game 1, the Wings responded with their season on the line and found a way to force the series back to San Francisco.

Now they have to do it again.

Golden State has won four of five meetings against Dallas this season, owns the WNBA's strongest regular-season scoring defense and returns home for the deciding game. The Valkyries don't need to duplicate their 104-80 demolition from Game 1 for this wager to work. At the right number, they simply need their broader matchup advantages to reappear.

Dallas proved Wednesday that this series isn't a mismatch. It hasn't yet shown that one spectacular offensive performance outweighs everything Golden State accomplished against the Wings over the previous four meetings.

If the market gives us Golden State -5.5 or better, the Valkyries belong on Friday's betting card.

Best Bet: Golden State Valkyries -5.5 or better

Betting lines and player availability can change before tipoff. This recommendation is tied specifically to Golden State -5.5 or better; if the spread moves materially beyond that number, the value and recommendation should be reevaluated.
