WNBA Best Bets for Sunday, October 4, 2026

The WNBA playoffs move into the semifinals Sunday with two Game 1 matchups and four teams remaining in the race for the championship. The New York Liberty travel to face the Atlanta Dream in the first semifinal before the Las Vegas Aces visit the Golden State Valkyries in Sunday's second game. Both series are now best-of-five, making the opening game an opportunity for the home teams to establish control before the series shifts locations.

The path to the semifinals couldn't have been much different for these four teams. New York pulled off the biggest surprise of the opening round by eliminating top-seeded Minnesota, while Atlanta swept Washington. Las Vegas needed a deciding Game 3 to eliminate Indiana, and Golden State also went the distance before beating Dallas 77-73 Friday night to advance. That gives us two fascinating Game 1 situations involving teams entering with different amounts of rest and very different first-round experiences.

Our WNBA Best Bets approach remains straightforward. Rather than automatically forcing a side and total from every matchup, we're identifying the single strongest wager from each game. That gives us two official plays for Sunday's semifinal slate before selecting our overall WNBA Best Bet of the Day.

New York Liberty vs. Atlanta Dream Best Bet

Sunday, October 4 — Atlanta, Georgia

New York enters the semifinals after producing the biggest upset of the opening round. The eighth-seeded Liberty eliminated No. 1 Minnesota in two games, winning 91-75 in Game 1 before completing the sweep with an 87-71 victory. New York didn't simply survive against the league's top seed; the Liberty won both games by double digits and held Minnesota below 80 points twice.

Atlanta was equally convincing in its opening series. The Dream swept Washington and enter the semifinals after finishing the regular season 30-14. Atlanta also closed the regular season with five consecutive victories before carrying that form into the postseason. The Dream have multiple ways to create offense and were one of the league's more balanced teams during the regular season, which helps explain why Atlanta opened as the favorite despite New York's impressive first-round performance.

The market currently has Atlanta favored by approximately 3.5 points with the total sitting around 172.5 to 173.5. That's a substantial scoring expectation for a playoff game, particularly considering what New York just accomplished defensively against Minnesota.

Why New York +3.5 Makes the Cut

There is always danger in overreacting to two postseason games, but New York's performance against Minnesota deserves more than casual consideration. The Liberty didn't need late-game luck to advance. They won the two games by 16 points apiece, outscoring the top seed 178-146 across the series. That kind of performance makes getting more than a possession in Game 1 attractive.

Atlanta certainly deserves to be favored at home. The Dream won 30 regular-season games, entered the playoffs playing excellent basketball and then handled Washington without needing a deciding game. The argument here isn't that Atlanta has been mispriced as the favorite; it's that the spread gives New York enough room for the Liberty to lose a competitive game and still cover.

The Liberty's postseason defense is particularly important. Holding Minnesota to 75 and 71 points gives New York a formula that can travel. If the Liberty can keep Atlanta from turning Game 1 into an open-floor offensive contest, getting 3.5 points becomes increasingly valuable in the fourth quarter.

New York also enters with confidence after eliminating the No. 1 seed without requiring a Game 3. That gives the Liberty preparation time without sacrificing the rhythm they developed in the opening round. Atlanta remains capable of winning Game 1, but asking the Dream to win by four or more against a New York team that just dominated Minnesota is more than I want to lay.

WNBA Best Bet: New York Liberty +3.5

Las Vegas Aces vs. Golden State Valkyries Best Bet

Sunday, October 4 — 4:00 PM ET — Chase Center

The second semifinal pairs the defending champion Las Vegas Aces against a Golden State team that has already made franchise history. The Valkyries advanced to their first WNBA semifinal by defeating Dallas 77-73 in Friday's deciding Game 3, giving Golden State only one full day between the end of its opening-round series and Sunday's semifinal opener.

Las Vegas also needed a deciding game, but the Aces completed their series Thursday and therefore enter with an additional recovery day. Las Vegas eliminated Indiana after a first round that tested the Aces much more severely than many expected. The experience of surviving an elimination game should help, but the bigger handicapping factor may simply be the additional time available to recover and prepare for Golden State.

The matchup itself should be considerably different from Golden State's series against Dallas. The Valkyries built their regular-season success around defense, finishing with the league's top scoring defense at 75.1 points allowed per game. Golden State returned to that identity in Friday's deciding game, holding Dallas to 73 after surrendering 108 in the Game 2 overtime loss.

The early market has Las Vegas favored by approximately 1.5 points with the total around 161.5, indicating sportsbooks view this as essentially a toss-up on Golden State's home floor.

Why Las Vegas -1.5 Makes the Cut

Golden State's defense and home court make this one of the tougher games on Sunday's board, but the short number allows us to back Las Vegas without asking the Aces to create substantial separation. At -1.5, we're essentially betting Las Vegas to win Game 1.

Rest matters here. Golden State played a physical elimination game Friday and now has to turn around for the semifinals Sunday. Las Vegas finished its first-round series a day earlier, giving the Aces additional recovery and preparation time. That isn't enough by itself to determine a playoff game, but it becomes meaningful when the spread is this small.

Las Vegas also enters the matchup with substantially more postseason experience. The Aces have repeatedly played deep into October with their championship core, while Golden State is navigating the first playoff run in franchise history. The Valkyries have already demonstrated that they belong at this stage, so experience shouldn't be treated as an automatic advantage. In a close fourth quarter, however, Las Vegas has been in these situations far more often.

Golden State's defensive profile makes laying a larger spread unattractive. Fortunately, we don't have to. The market is essentially asking whether Las Vegas can leave Chase Center with a victory, and the combination of additional rest, playoff experience and offensive upside makes the Aces my preferred side.

WNBA Best Bet: Las Vegas Aces -1.5

WNBA October 4 Betting Card

Sunday's semifinal opener gives us two spread wagers rather than forcing totals simply for the sake of variety. New York +3.5 against Atlanta backs a Liberty team that just eliminated the No. 1 seed with consecutive 16-point victories. Atlanta deserves respect as the home favorite, but getting more than a possession with New York provides enough protection in what should be a much more competitive game than the seeding suggests.

Las Vegas -1.5 against Golden State takes the opposite approach. Rather than taking points with the home underdog, we're laying a very short number with an Aces team that has an additional day of recovery and considerably more experience in deep postseason series. Golden State's defense should keep Game 1 competitive, but Las Vegas only needs a two-point victory to cover the current number.

Both recommendations remain price-sensitive. New York becomes less appealing if the spread falls below +3, while Las Vegas would become considerably harder to back if the market pushes the Aces toward -3.5 or -4. At the current numbers, however, both belong on Sunday's card.

WNBA Best Bet of the Day

Of Sunday's two wagers, New York Liberty +3.5 earns the designation as our WNBA Best Bet of the Day.

Atlanta has earned its position as the favorite. The Dream won 30 games during the regular season, closed the schedule with five straight victories and swept Washington in the opening round. None of that should be discounted. The value comes from getting more than a possession with a New York team whose postseason performance has substantially exceeded what its No. 8 seed would suggest.

The Liberty didn't sneak past Minnesota. They beat the league's top seed 91-75 and 87-71, producing a combined 32-point advantage across two games while demonstrating that their defense can control a playoff series. New York now enters the semifinals rested and confident rather than arriving after an exhausting deciding game.

Atlanta may still protect its home floor and take Game 1. At +3.5, New York doesn't necessarily need to prevent that from happening. A one-, two- or three-point Dream victory still cashes our wager, and the Liberty have already demonstrated enough postseason form to make that protection valuable.

WNBA Best Bet of the Day: New York Liberty +3.5
