France and Senegal meet at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Tuesday at 3:00 PM ET in a Group I match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. France is one of the favorites to win the tournament and arrives with a WLWWW record across its last five matches. Senegal is unbeaten in World Cup qualifying and carries an LWWWW record despite being one of the toughest teams to evaluate entering the competition. With Sweden and another group opponent still ahead, both nations know a positive result in the opener would provide a major boost toward reaching the knockout stage. France Preview

France remains one of the most talented teams in international football and enters the tournament with expectations of another deep run in the knockout stages. Didier Deschamps has guided Les Bleus to two World Cup finals and continues to rely on a disciplined buildup around a strong defense. While critics occasionally question the style of play, the results continue to speak for themselves.

The biggest storyline surrounding France is the incredible collection of attacking talent. Kylian Mbappé remains the centerpiece of the attack and is closing in on the national scoring record. Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé provides another elite option, while Michael Olise has emerged as one of Europe's most dangerous young attackers. France showed a more aggressive approach during recent friendlies against Brazil and Colombia, suggesting Deschamps may allow the attack greater freedom in this tournament.

The midfield and defense remain loaded with quality. Rodri may receive headlines elsewhere, but France counters with a group featuring Warren Zaïre-Emery, experienced veterans, and a defensive unit anchored by Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba. Goalkeeping remains a strength, and France has the depth to absorb injuries better than most teams in the competition.

Injuries: Lamine Yamal does not play for France. No major injuries have been reported among France's projected starters entering the tournament.

Senegal Preview

Senegal arrives as one of Africa's strongest representatives and enters the tournament with ambitions far beyond simply advancing from the group stage. The Lions of Teranga were unbeaten during qualification and continue to feature a roster filled with players competing in top European leagues. The squad blends veteran leadership with emerging young talent.

Sadio Mané remains the face of Senegalese football and is expected to play in his final World Cup. Although no longer at the peak of his powers, Mané still provides leadership, creativity, and finishing ability. Nicolas Jackson gives Senegal pace and physicality up front, while Ismaila Sarr remains a dangerous threat on the wing. Midfielders Pape Matar Sarr and Habib Diarra add energy and athleticism through the middle of the pitch.

Defensively, Senegal continues to rely on the experience of Kalidou Koulibaly, who remains one of Africa's most respected defenders. The team has enough quality to compete with anyone on its day, and a recent victory over England showed what this group is capable of producing against elite opposition. Senegal's biggest challenge will be turning possession into consistent scoring opportunities against top defenses.

Injuries: No major injuries reported entering the tournament.

France vs Senegal Pick

  • France -185

France deserves favorite status because of its superior depth and world-class talent throughout the squad. Mbappé remains one of the best players in the world, while Dembélé and Olise create matchup problems that few defenses can handle. France also has far more experience navigating pressure situations deep into major tournaments. Senegal has enough quality to stay competitive and should not be overlooked. Mané, Jackson, and Sarr can create problems in transition, but France possesses advantages across most positions on the field. Expect Senegal to compete hard, but France's attacking quality should prove decisive over 90 minutes.

France vs Senegal Over/Under Pick

  • Over 2.5

This match will cash over 2.5 goals. France has enough attacking firepower to contribute multiple goals on its own, especially with Mbappé, Dembélé, and Olise leading the attack. Senegal also possesses the pace and creativity necessary to threaten on counterattacks. While both teams are capable defensively, the overall talent in the final third points toward scoring opportunities at both ends. An open match featuring several quality attackers creates a strong path toward this total finishing above the number.
