Iran Preview

Iran qualified comfortably for the World Cup and was among the first nations to secure a place in the tournament. Despite dealing with significant distractions away from the field, Team Melli remains one of the strongest sides in Asia and enters with realistic hopes of advancing from the group stage. Head coach Amir Ghalenoei has emphasized flexibility, using multiple formations during recent friendlies while maintaining a 4-2-3-1 system as the team's primary setup.

Defense remains a major strength. Veteran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand is preparing for his third consecutive World Cup as Iran's starter, while Shojae Khalilzadeh anchors the defense. Saeid Ezatolahi provides stability in midfield and plays a critical role shielding the back line. Iran has traditionally been difficult to break down and is comfortable playing without extended periods of possession.

Mehdi Taremi remains the focal point of the attack and will wear the captain's armband during the tournament. The experienced striker has produced at the highest levels in Europe and remains Iran's most reliable scoring threat. Winger Mehdi Ghayedi could also play an important role after returning from injury and scoring in a recent friendly. Iran believes it has the talent to produce its best World Cup performance in years.

Injuries: No major injuries reported entering the tournament. Saeid Ezatolahi has dealt with fitness concerns but is expected to be available.

New Zealand Preview

New Zealand qualified by winning the Oceania region and arrives with a squad that many believe is stronger than the group that reached the 2010 World Cup. The All Whites have evolved significantly over the last decade, with more players competing professionally around the world. While New Zealand is the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, there is genuine belief that the squad can challenge for a place in the knockout stage.

Head coach Darren Bazeley prefers a possession-based approach, although New Zealand will likely spend less time on the ball against stronger opponents. The team gained valuable experience through a challenging schedule of friendlies, including a draw against Norway and a victory over Chile. Those results showed New Zealand can compete when executing its game plan effectively.

Chris Wood remains the team's leader and most important player. The veteran striker is New Zealand's all-time leading scorer and continues to be the primary attacking threat. Midfielder Eli Just is another player to watch after an outstanding club season in Scotland. The challenge for New Zealand will be creating enough scoring opportunities against stronger defensive teams throughout the group stage.

Injuries: Chris Wood is returning from a significant knee injury suffered late last year but is expected to play.

Iran vs New Zealand Pick

  • Iran -110

Iran has the advantage because of its experience, defense, and proven attacking leadership. Taremi remains one of Asia's top forwards, while Iran's defensive unit has consistently performed well in major international competitions. Team Melli also has far more experience facing top-level opposition than New Zealand. The All Whites deserve respect after a strong qualification campaign and have enough talent to stay competitive. However, Iran's experience at this level and overall quality should allow it to control the match for long stretches. Backing Iran to secure three points is the strongest option in this matchup.

Iran vs New Zealand Over/Under Pick

  • Under 2.5

This match will cash under 2.5 goals. Iran's success has often been built on defensive discipline and structured play, while New Zealand is likely to adopt a cautious approach against one of the stronger teams in the group. Neither side is expected to play an open, attacking style from the opening whistle. Iran should create the better chances, but New Zealand's focus on staying compact points toward a lower-scoring match. A result in the range of 1-0 or 2-0 appears more likely than a shootout.
