Mexico and South Korea meet at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Thursday at 9:00 PM ET in a crucial Group A match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Both nations opened the tournament with victories and sit atop the group with three points. Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the tournament opener, while South Korea rallied from behind to beat Czechia 2-1. A win here would put either side in excellent position to reach the knockout stage. Mexico enters on a five-match unbeaten run (WWWWD), while South Korea has won three of its last five matches. The current odds list Mexico as a slight favorite despite South Korea's impressive opening performance. Build your bankroll with our free World Cup picks.

Mexico Preview

Mexico delivered a professional performance in its opening victory over South Africa. Javier Aguirre's side struck early through Julián Quiñones and controlled the match for long stretches before Raúl Jiménez added an insurance goal in the second half. The co-hosts finished with 60% possession and allowed very little defensively. Mexico conceded just 0.07 expected goals and never appeared seriously threatened despite playing the final minutes with 10 men after César Montes received a red card in stoppage time. The defense looked organized, while Erik Lira and Roberto Alvarado played key roles in creating chances.

Quiñones and Jiménez continue to provide a reliable attacking partnership. Mexico has scored 12 goals across its last five matches and enters this contest with momentum after victories over South Africa, Serbia, Australia, and Ghana. Playing in front of a home crowd in Guadalajara should provide another significant boost. The main concern is the suspension of Montes following his red card against South Africa. Mexico will need to adjust defensively against a dangerous South Korean attack.

Injuries:  No major injuries reported. César Montes is suspended.

South Korea Preview

South Korea may have been the more impressive team in the opening round despite facing stronger opposition. Hong Myung-bo's squad controlled play against Czechia and deserved its 2-1 victory after creating numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match. The Koreans finished with 62% possession and generated 2.30 expected goals. Hwang In-Beom was outstanding, scoring the equalizer and assisting Oh Hyeon-Gyu's winner. Son Heung-Min did not score but remained heavily involved, while Lee Kang-In consistently created dangerous moments in the attacking third.

South Korea's ability to dominate possession and create chances against European opposition stands out entering this matchup. The team has now scored multiple goals in four of its last six matches and appears comfortable playing an aggressive attacking style. Defensively, however, South Korea did allow Czechia to score from a set piece and needed several important saves from Kim Seung-Gyu late in the match to preserve the victory. Those defensive lapses could be costly against Mexico.

Injuries: No major injuries reported entering the match.

Mexico vs South Korea Pick

  • Draw (+185)

This matchup is much closer than the odds suggest. South Korea generated stronger underlying numbers in its opener and looked dangerous throughout the match against a Czechia side that qualified through the UEFA playoffs. Hwang In-Beom, Son Heung-Min, and Lee Kang-In give the Koreans multiple attacking threats capable of troubling Mexico's back line. Mexico deserves respect for its opening victory, but the suspension of Montes weakens a defense that will face significantly more pressure than it did against South Africa. In the end, the two will battle to a stalemate.

Mexico vs South Korea Over/Under Pick

  • Under 2.5 Goals (-180)

Despite both teams scoring twice in their opening matches, this contest will be a tighter tactical battle. A draw would still leave both sides in strong position entering the final group match, which could create a more cautious approach. Mexico has allowed just one goal across its last four matches, while South Korea's defensive organization has improved considerably under Hong Myung-bo. With group positioning on the line and two disciplined teams meeting, goals may be harder to find than they were in the opening round. The under is the play in what should be one of the most competitive matches of the second group-stage slate.
