Colorado Rockies (8-8, 6-4 Away) at Pittsburgh Pirates (10-4, 4-2 Home)
MLB: Monday, April 16, 2018, PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 7:05 PM ET
The Colorado Rockies are playing well on the road early in this campaign and after suffering three consecutive defeats at home, one to Atlanta and two to San Diego, they responded with three straight wins, including the opening pair of tilts in the series with Washington. On the other hand, Pittsburgh is currently the best team in the NL Central with two victories ahead of Milwaukee and St. Louis, and now is returning home following a series with the Miami Marlins.
The pitching matchup for Monday’s tilt will give us German Marquez for the Colorado Rockies against the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Steven Brault. First pitch was set for 7:05 PM ET.
The Rockies are hoping for another positive series on the road
Colorado is looking to get back to the winning ways after losing to the Washington Nationals in the third clash of the series, but they can be satisfied with the result in the capital as they recorded a couple of wins. The Rockies allowed just two runs in those two wins, but their defense was well-beaten in a 6-2 loss, and even though they took an early 2-0 lead, the visitors succumbed to the deserved defeat. Charlie Blackmon’s homer and run from Gerardo Parra put the Rockies 2-0 up, but that was all from Colorado as they had miserable two hits in opposite to the Nationals’ 12.
German Marquez is set to start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, and he’s coming from an 11-7 record in 2017, a 4.39 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, 49 walks, and 147 strikeouts in 29 games in total. Marquez started three games in this season as he pitched 12 innings, allowing 12 hits and eight runs with ten walks and ten strikeouts.
The Pirates are eager to continue with good performances at the PNC Park
Pittsburgh is coming home after their road trip to Cleveland and Miami, and following a 7-2 loss to the Marlins, the Pirates responded with great defense in a 1-0 victory. The Pirates allowed six hits to Miami and managed to keep them off the scoreboard for the entire tilt, but had problems to score as well until the ninth inning when Corey Dickerson’s bunt single provided a run to Starling Marte. The hosts failed to respond and the Pirates secured the third game of the season without conceding a single run.
Steven Brault is listed as a starting pitcher against the Colorado Rockies, and he’s coming from a 1-0 record in 2017, a 4.67 ERA, a 1.59 WHIP, 14 walks, and 23 strikeouts in 11 games overall (four starts). Brault already started two games in this campaign as he pitched 13 innings, allowing 12 hits and five runs with seven walks and ten strikeouts. The Pirates are 4-0 in Brault’s last four starts following a team loss in their previous game, while they are 6-1 in Brault’s previous seven starts.
- 46-95 in their last 141 games played on the road vs. a left-handed starter
- 2-6 in their last eight vs. an opponent with a winning record
- 1-5 in their last six vs. National League Central rivals
- 4-1 in their last five during game one of a series
- 8-2 in their last ten games played at home
- 9-4 in their last 13 games played on Monday
Pittsburgh won 12 out of the previous 17 H2H encounters, while they were victorious in 11 out of the last 14 meetings at the PNC Park, and although the Rockies are playing well on the road at the moment, I am backing the hosts to open the series with a victory. When it comes to the points, under is 12-2-3 in the last 17 duels in Pittsburgh.
