MLB: Monday, April 16, Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois, 7 PM ET.
The Chicago Cubs will be going for their third straight win when they take on the St. Louis Cardinals in the first game of their three-game series on Monday night.
Adam Wainwright, who is 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA, will take the mound for the Cardinals, while the Cubs turn to Tyler Chatwood, who is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA.
Cardinals Going For Fifth Consecutive Win
The Cardinals have been fighting to overcome their slow start to the season, and have won their last four games. They will be going for their sixth win in their last seven games and their fifth win in a row when they take on the defending NL Central champions on Monday night.
In their last game, the Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds to sweep their weekend series. The win helped the Cardinals gain some ground on the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central, but they will need to be even better to defeat the Cubs.
The Cardinals pitching staff did a very good job in their last game, holding the Reds to two runs. Carlos Martinez pitched a gem, allowing two hits and zero earned runs in seven innings. He also struck out 11 batters on Sunday.
The Cardinals didn’t score a lot of runs on Sunday, but they were very efficient and finished the game with three runs on five hits. They will also be hoping Wainwright, who gave up eight hits and three runs in his last outing, finally gets back on track and gets his first win of the year.
Cubs Still Trying To Figure Things Out
After a disappointing 2017 campaign, the Cubs were expected to bounce back with a great season, but so far, they haven’t looked like the team that won the World Series two seasons ago.
The Cubs have been average so far this year, and have been unable to take advantage of favorable matchups, which will likely haunt them later in the season unless they go on a big run.
Chicago will be going up against a St. Louis team that has won four games in a row and have their sights set on reclaiming the NL Central from the Cubs.
In their last game, the Cubs defeated the Atlanta Braves 14-10 to split their weekend series. The weather prevented them from playing the final game of the series, but the Cubs will be happy with a win at the moment.
With an extra day off, the Cubs will be hoping that Chatwood is able to bounce back from his last appearance, in which he gave up nine hits and five earned runs in five innings.
St. Louis is:
- 4-0 in their last 4 overall.
- 5-0 in their last 5 road games.
- 4-0 in their last 4 vs. National League Central.
- 1-6 in their last 7 games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30.
- 0-5 in their last 5 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
The Cardinals have been on fire lately, giving them the advantage over the Cubs, who have struggled at home in their last five games.
