We have an American League matchup for you to consider on Tuesday evening when the Cleveland Indians face the Seattle Mariners in game two of their three-game series. The Indians will look to Shane Bieber to stop the Mariners and Mike Leake is scheduled to man the bump against the Tribe. I’m the Flash and will be discussing this game with you today.
Indians Swept by Kansas City
The Indians are currently tied for second place with the Detroit Tigers and 1.5 games behind division leader Minnesota. Cleveland was swept by the Kansas City Royals in a series that saw the Indians outscored 17-9. The Indians pitching staff ranks fifth in the American League with a 3.42 team ERA and their 4.05 xFIP suggests the Tribe pitching staff may have been a bit lucky thus far this season. The Indians offense ranks 14th in the American League and if the Tribe plans on competing with the big boys in the American League, they had better start hitting the baseball.
Through 15 games:
+ 2016: 8-7
+ 2017: 8-7
+ 2018: 9-6
+ 2019: 8-7

The Indians have a large disabled list with the most notable being infielders Jason Kipnis and Francisco Lindor. Not only does this hurt the Cleveland offense, but their defense up the middle of the field is suffering in their absence. Kipnis is due to come off the DL on Monday and Lindor will miss this series with the Mariners.
Bieber (1-0, 1.80) is off to a good start to his 2019 campaign and is coming off his first win of the season, a three-hit shutout over seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts. Bieber boasts a 1.80 ERA and his 3.80 xFIP suggests some regression might take place. The current Mariners have just eight at-bats against Bieber over their career.
The Indians offense rank 28th in baseball against right-handed pitching this season and have a .135 ISO, .263 wOBA and wRC+ of 61 and a 26 percent strikeout rate against righties this season.
Mariners Swept by Houston Astros
Seattle has the most wins in baseball thus far this season and was just swept by the red-hot Houston Astros. The Mariners are still a game ahead of the Astros in the American League West standings and a strong series against the Indians to keep some distance between them and the Astros. The Seattle pitching staff ranks eighth in the American League with a team ERA of 4.20 and their 4.79 xFIP suggests the staff might be a bit lucky thus far this season.

The Mariners aren’t listing any significant injuries for their series with the Indians.
Leake (2-0, 4.15) is coming off a no-decision against the Kansas City Royals in which he pitched five innings of five-hit, four earned run ball with four strikeouts, two walks, and three bombs. Leake has an ERA of 4.15 and his 4.93 xFIP suggests maybe some regression is in store. Leake has also allowed 2.60 bombs per nine innings and the current Indians has had some success in their career against Leake, slashing .260/.312/.370/.682 with two bombs and 21 strikeouts over 127 at bats.
Seattle ranks sixth in baseball against right-handed pitching with a .235 ISO, .353 wOBA and wRC+ of 131 and strikes out in 25 percent of their at-bats against righties this season.
- Mariners are 3-10 in their last 13 Tuesday games.
- Mariners are 0-4 in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a winning record.
- Mariners are 0-4 in their last 4 vs. a team with a winning record.
- Indians are 7-0 in Bieber’s last 7 road starts.
- Indians are 4-0 in Bieber’s last 4 road starts vs. a team with a winning record.
- Indians are 6-1 in Bieber’s last 7 starts with 4 days of rest.
- Indians are 5-1 in Bieber’s last 6 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.
- Indians are 5-1 in Bieber’s last 6 starts.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Cleveland wins games when Shane Bieber pitches and at some point the Tribe is going to break out of their scoring slump, and Leake and his two-plus bombs allowed per nine innings pitched is just as good as any pitcher to break a slump on. Seattle is starting to come back down to earth after a great start to their season and I think Bieber is going to do his thing, the Indians will score some runs, and we make “Cash with the Flash” when we play the Indians on Tuesday night.
Prediction: Indians -108
Full-Game Total Pick
Eight runs aren’t enough for these two sides and especially with Leake pitching. Leake has allowed six earned runs in 11 innings pitched at night this season and Bieber has allowed 26 earned runs over the past three seasons on 65.1 innings pitched on the road, so I think there will be some runs scored. I saw the following trend that might be helpful on Tuesday night.
- Over is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings.
We make “Cash with the Flash” when we play the over on Tuesday night.
Prediction: Over Eight Runs
