The new look Phillies will take on the Mets for the first time this season. The Mets are coming off a split in Atlanta. They will send Steven Matz to the mound in game two of this three-game set. Matz will face Nick Pivetta for the Phils.

Phillies Survive in Miami

The Phillies are 5-5 after winning their first four games of the season. Every NL East game is important given that there are four teams that could win the division. On Sunday afternoon in Miami, the Phillies survived a 14 inning game. Vince Velasquez went six innings allowing one run on two hits. There was nothing but three home runs in this game, two for Philadelphia. Jean Segura hit a two-run homer in the op of the 14th which proved to be the game winner. Philadelphia used eight pitchers on their way to a win in the series finale. Bryce Harper was 1-7 in the game. He is hitting .280 on the season. The Phillies were viewed as the favorite in the division and will look to prove that in their first games against the Mets.

Pivetta is in his third season as a member of the Phillies rotation. He made 32 starts last season. So far in 2019, he has not been strong. Pivetta is 1-1 with a 9.45 ERA. He has given up 24 hits in 13.1 innings. The Nationals got to him last time out. Pivetta surrendered seven runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings pitched. He has not had luck against the Mets in his career. Pivetta is 2-2 with a 6.39 ERA in five starts against the Mets. He will need a better outing in this one if the Phillies want to gain an early lead in the NL East.

deGrom, Mets Fall Again

Jacob deGrom took the mound on Sunday Night Baseball looking to give the Mets a series win in Atlanta. The 2018 Cy Young Award winner turned in his second poor start in a row. He went five innings allowing three runs on five hits and throwing 114 pitches. J.D. Davis homered in the second inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. From there on out, it was all Atlanta. The Mets trailed 6-1 heading into the eighth. They added two runs on tow singles by Amed Rosario and Keon Broxton. New York was not able to get any closer. Every pitcher for the Mets allowed a run in this game. This has been the story all season long for the Metropolitans. Their bullpen has been a disaster. They will need everyone to be locked in when they travel to Philly to play in the bandbox that is Citizens Bank Park.

Matz has been the king of potential for the Mets. He is a left-hander that throws in the mid-90’s with a great curveball. He battled injury problems during his first full years in the bigs. Last season, he finally hit the 30 start mark for the first time. This will be his fourth start of 2019. Matz is 1-0 so far with a 1.65 ERA. He has turned in two solid starts in a row, but his problem has been keeping his pitch count down. Last time out, he pitched in Miami. Matz went 5.1 innings giving up one run on three hits. He has struck out 19 batters in 16.1 innings pitched. With the bullpen on the fritz, Matz will need to go at least six strong against the Phillies.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet

These two teams have been even over the years. They have split their last 10 meetings. The difference in this one will be the pitching. Pivetta has not had success against the Mets, and they are an improved lineup this season. The Mets dominate Citizens Bank. They set their home run record in a game in Philly during a game in 2015. Matz has been good so far this season. That can end at any time, but the Mets should be able to score in this game. They will also be underdog in all games in this series. This might be a good time to take the Mets to win the series with good odds.

Prediction: NY Mets

Full-Game Total Pick

Citizens Bank Park is not big at all. The ball flies out of that park at a high rate. Both sides have players that can leave the yard at anytime, at least five players on each side. The ball will be flying this entire three-game series. Three of the last five have gone over in this series and both lineups are significantly better than previous seasons. There will be a lot of runs score but especially in the second and third games of the series. Take the over in every game in this series.

Prediction: Over
