The Nationals and Giants will begin their series on Tuesday night after an off day on Monday. The Nationals lost two out of three in their previous series to the Pirates. They will send Stephen Strasburg to the mound in game one against the Giants. San Francisco will roll with Dereck Rodriguez in the opener.
Nationals Lose Series to Pirates, Fall to .500
The Nationals have been a team that has underachieved for many seasons now. This may be another. They are 7-7 currently after a loss to the Pirates. Max Scherzer gave up two in the first inning on Sunday. He ended up going eight innings allowing three runs. Howie Kendrick cut their deficit in half right away with an RBI-double in the first. Juan Soto tied the game at three with an RBI-single in the third. The game remained 3-3 until the top of the ninth when the Pirates were able to push a run across. Washington loaded the bases in the bottom half, but Anthony Rendon flew out to center field to end the game. He was 1-4 on the day with an RBI. Kendrick and Adam Eaton had multi-hit games at the top of the lineup for the Nationals.

It is crazy to think that this is the 10th season for Strasburg. Who can forget his electric major league debut in 2010 when he struck out 14 batters over seven innings. Who did he face? The Pirates who just beat them two out of three. In three starts, Strasburg has a 5.40 ERA. He has allowed 16 hits in 16.2 innings while striking out 20. Strasburg has turned into a great pitching in this league, but he may not have turned out as expected after his debut because of injury. He is healthy this year and will look to get going against the Giants.
Giants Lose Finale, Still Win Series
It was a strong series for the Giants when they faced Colorado for four. It did not end well, but the Giants won the first three games before dropping the finale, 4-0. There is not much to say about this one. The Giants did not get their first hit until the seventh inning and it was the only one of the game for them. Evan Longoria was the only Giant to get a hit. Derek Holland got the loss for San Francisco when he allowed all four runs in six innings. The Giants did not get off to a hot start this season, but they took three of four against a struggling Rockies’ team. They will go across the country to D.C. to take on another struggling team.

Rodriguez burst onto the scene in San Francisco in 2018. The son of Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez is looking to become a staple for the Giants’ rotation. He has made three starts this season and is 1-2 with a 4.15 ERA. The Giants are not a great team and run support will be hard to come by for the pitchers. Rodriguez has walked just one batter in 17.1 innings pitched. This is an important trait for a starter. Rodriguez is a young pitcher with great stuff that the Giants feel good about moving forward.
- Nationals are 5-0 in their last 5 games following a loss
- Nationals are 4-1 in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing record
- Nationals are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. a team with a losing record
- Nationals are 8-3 in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400
- Nationals are 36-17 in their last 53 Tuesday games
- Giants are 8-17 in the last 25 meetings in Washington
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
These odds are high but the fact remains that the Nationals should win this game. The question is by how much. The run line is intriguing but the safe play remains the money line for Washington. They will have the advantage in the pitching match up with Strasburg going. They will also be home but that should not affect much with an off day on Monday. This gives the Giants time to rest and prepare for the series. Washington is a .500 team but they could get over that with a series win against the Giants.
Prediction: Nationals -180
Full-Game Total Pick
Three of the last four games between these two teams have gone over. Both pitchers have high ERA’s this season. They have not found their groove yet and it is hard to imagine that they will here. Both teams have been scoring runs despite losing their previous game. This will be a high scoring affair in game one of the series after an off day. Take the Nationals and expect them to score a lot of runs in this one.
Prediction: Over 8
