Toronto Blue Jays vs Oakland Athletics

Where: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland California

When: Friday, April 19, 2019 10:07pm Eastern

We have an American League matchup to consider on Friday night when the Toronto Blue Jays visit Northern California for the first of a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics. Toronto is in fourth place in the American League East with a record of 7-12 and plans on righty Marcus Stroman on the bump. Oakland is in fourth place in the American League West with a record of 11-10 and are planning on right-hander Aaron Brooks to get the start for the Athletics. I’m the Flash and will be discussing this contest for you today.

Toronto Wins Series Over Minnesota

The Toronto Blue Jays are rebuilding and are off to a record of seven wins and 11 losses thus far this season. The Jays lost a series to the Tampa Bay Rays and enter this series coming off a series victory over the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis. The Blue Jays offense ranks 13th in the American League and the pitching staff ranks fifth with a team ERA of 3.52 and their team xFIP of 4.11 suggests the Jays staff might have been a bit lucky thus far this season.

Toronto has a long disabled list without any significant injuries for this series.

Stroman (0-3, 1.99) is coming off a four-inning, three-hit outing of shutout ball with four walks and five strikeouts without an earned run in what would amount to an 8-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. Stroman has a 1.99 ERA and his 3.54 xFIP suggests some regression might be in store for Stroman at some point this season. The Athletics have had some success over their career against Stroman, slashing .326/.418/.457/.875 with one bomb and 11 strikeouts over 46 career at-bats.

The Blue Jays rank 24th in baseball against right-handed pitching with a .151 ISO, .288 wOBA and wRC+ of 82 with a 29 percent strikeout rate against right-handers this season.

Athletics Second Best Offense in American League

Oakland has high hopes for the 2019 baseball club, and they are an above .500 team that swept Baltimore in four straight games and split their series with both Texas and Houston. The Athletics pitching staff ranks ninth in the American League with a team ERA of 4.46 and their team xFIP of 5.24 suggests the A’s pitching staff might be a bit lucky thus far this season. Oakland has the second-best offense in the American League and averages nearly five runs scored per game this season.

The Athletics have a long-disabled list with mostly pitchers but also includes Matt Olson, who won’t play in this series. Olson hit 29 bombs and drove in 84 runs for the A’s last season and his power from the left side has been missed this season.

Brooks (2-1, 4.24) is coming off a solid outing against the Baltimore Orioles, limiting Baltimore to three hits with three walks and three strikeouts and three earned runs over six innings pitched for his second victory of the season. Brooks has an ERA of 4.24 and his 5.30 xFIP suggests some regression could be in store for Brooks.

Oakland ranks 19th in baseball against right-handers with a .182 ISO, .313 wOBA, wRC+ of 102 and a 19 percent strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet

Oakland is 6-4 at home on the run-line and Toronto is also 6-4 on the run line as the away team. These two clubs have plenty of similarities but the A’s offense is much better than the Blue Jays and that should carry the day against Stroman and his career 3.58 road xFIP isn’t going to be able to save the Jays on Friday night. I saw the following trends that might be helpful for Friday night;

  • Blue Jays are 1-5 in the last 6 meetings in Oakland.
  • Blue Jays are 0-7 in the last 7 meetings.

We make “Cash with the Flash” when we play the Athletics on Friday night.

Prediction: Oakland -128

Full-Game Total Pick

Neither side has an offense against right-handers that are going to put much fear into either pitcher and the same could be said for the hitters against either pitcher. So I expect a bunch of runs on Friday night. I saw the following trends that might be helpful for Friday night;

  • Over is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings.
  • Over is 5-2-2 in the last 9 meetings in Oakland.

We make “Cash with the Flash” when we play the over in this game on Friday night.

Prediction: Over Eight Runs
