New York Mets vs. St. Louis Cardinals
MLB: Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 2:15 PM EST
The Mets got off to a great start to the season, but they have cooled off and recently lost four of five games. In those four losses, they gave up a total of 35 runs and in the last two losses in that span, they only scored five runs. On the season, New York has been led by their lineup while their pitching has struggled not ranking in the top 25 in the Majors in team ERA. They are in 2nd place in the NL East right on the heels of the first place Philadelphia Phillies.
The Cardinals recently snapped their two-game losing streak and in their last series in losing two of three games from Milwaukee they gave up 18 runs in the losses and only gave up three in the lone win. St. Louis is right in the NL Central race where they are one of three teams above .500. The Cardinals rank in the middle of the pack in terms of team ERA and rank 10th in the Majors in runs scored.
The Cardinals have won four of their last five games facing the Mets.
Ace looks to get mojo back
The Mets send ace Jacob deGrom (2-2 3.68 ERA) to the hill in this game and after winning his first two starts the club has dropped his last two starts. In his first two starts he went 13 innings and did not give up any runs and in his last two he has lasted nine innings and given up nine earned runs. In deGrom’s last start he gave up three runs in five innings in a 7-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves. While deGrom has at least nine strikeouts in three of his four starts this season, he has given up five HR in his last two outings. New York is 4-1 in deGrom’s last five starts facing the Cardinals and this is his first start against them this season.
(edit: deGrom was just placed on the IL after this story was written; the Mets had not announced a replacement)
Pete Alonso is off to a solid start to the season leading the Mets in both HR and RBI and he and Michael Conforto have combined for 11 HR. five players for the Mets already have double-digits in RBI. New York has won eight of their last 11 games facing a right-hand starter.
Steady, but not spectacular
Miles Mikolas (1-1 6.00 ERA) has been steady on the season, but unspectacular and in his last outing he got a lot of support. In his last start he gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings in a 9-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds. After losing Mikolas’s first start of the season the Cardinals have won his last three where he has totaled 16 innings and gave up 10 runs. St. Louis has won eight of his last nine home starts and they have won his last eight starts facing a team with a winning record.
Marcell Ozuna, who has been red hot lately, leads the Cardinals in both HR and RBI and he and Paul Goldschmidt rank in the top five in the NL in HR.

Matt Carpenter hit a career high 36 HR last season and this season is off to a slow start batting just over .200 with three HR and only five RBI. St. Louis has lost seven of their last nine Saturday games.
The St. Louis Cardinals are:
- 5-0 in their last 5 home games
- 6-2 in their last 8 vs. a team with a winning record
- 7-3 in their last 10 overall
The New York Mets are:
- 8-1 in their last 9 during game 2 of a series
- 7-3 in their last 10 Saturday games
- 8-3 in their last 11 road games vs. a right-handed starter
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Mets are struggling as of late and their Ace in deGrom has not pitched like an Ace in his last two starts. He will turn things around in this outing and have a great one taming the St. Louis lineup. Mikolas will give up a few runs and that is all deGrom will need and the Mets will take this Game 2.
Prediction: PICK: Mets
Full-Game Total Pick
A couple of the key head to head trends point to the Over in this game and the total has gone Over in deGrom’s last four starts facing the Cardinals. However, still taking the Under in this game. DeGrom will toss up a gem in this game and while the Mets will score some runs they will not light up the scoreboard. In this NL matchup take the Under, as that is the money pick.
Prediction: PICK: Under
