Milwaukee Brewers vs St Louis Cardinals

Where: Busch Stadium, St Louis Missouri

When: Wednesday, April 24, 2019, 1:15 pm Eastern

We have a National League Central Division matchup to consider when the Milwaukee Brewers meet the St Louis Cardinals for a matinee matchup with a good chance of rain in the forecast. The Brewers are in third place in the Central and are planning Jhoulys Chacin to handle the starting pitching duties. The Cardinals are tied with Pittsburgh for first place in the Central and hope right-hander Adam Wainright can stymie the big Brewers bats. I’m the Flash and will be previewing this game for you today.

Brewers Lost Five of Last Six Games

Milwaukee is riding the struggle bus and has lost five of their last six games including game one of this three-game series with the Cardinals. Milwaukee has the fifth-ranked offense in the National League, led by Lorenzo Cain (.286/.385/.549/.909). Christian Yelich leads Milwaukee with 13 bombs and 31 RBI and Ryan Braun is slashing .205/.235/.538/.773 to lead the potent Brewers lineup.

The Brewers have a long injury list with the most significant being to infielder Mike Moustakas. Moustakas has a finger injury and is listed as day to day. Moustakas has six bombs and 10 RBI in 71 at-bats this season.

The Milwaukee pitching staff is having plenty of trouble and is ranked dead last in the National League. The Brewers staff has a team ERA of 5.37 and their 4.41 xFIP suggests some positive regression might be in store for the Brewers hurlers. Brandon Woodruff leads Milwaukee in wins (2) and ERA (5.81), Josh Hader leads the Brewers with five saves and Alex Claudio has a team-leading six holds for Milwaukee this season.

Chacin (2-2, 5.92 ERA) will get the nod on Wednesday afternoon and is coming off a decent outing against the Dodgers. Chacin lasted five innings while scattering five hits with three walks and five strikeouts and two earned runs in the no-decision performance. Chacin has an ERA of 5.92 and his 5.29 xFIP suggests maybe Chacin has been a bit unlucky this season. Chacin is walking 5.18 and striking out 8.14 hitters and allowing 1.85 bombs per nine innings pitched this season. Current Cardinals have had some success against Chacin over their career, slashing .263/.349/.430/.779 with six bombs and 36 strikeouts over 179 at bats.

Milwaukee ranks 16th in baseball against right-handed pitching and boasts a .212 ISO, .327 wOBA and wRC+ of 100 with a 26 percent strikeout rate against right-handers this season.

Cardinals Tied for First Place with Pittsburgh

St Louis has won four of its last five games and is tied with the Pirates for first place in the National League Central Division. The Cardinals have the second-best offense in the National League, led by Paul Goldschmidt with a team-leading nine bombs and 18 RBI and a slash line of .270/.363/.719/.1.082. Paul DeJong leads the Cardinals with a .330 batting average and Matt Carpenter is slashing .226/.327/.548/.874 with three bombs and five RBI to lead the Cardinals offense.

There is plenty of pitchers on the Cardinals injured list but are without any significant injuries they haven’t already been dealing with since Spring Training.

The Cardinals pitching staff ranks eighth in the National League with a 4.34 ERA and their 4.57 xFIP suggests maybe the Cardinals have been a bit lucky thus far this season. Relief pitcher John Gant leads the Cardinals with three wins, starting pitcher Miles Mikolas leads St Louis with a 4.97 ERA, closer Jordan Hicks has a team high five saves and Andrew Miller has four holds for the Cardinals this season.

Wainright (1-2, 4.74 ERA) will take the ball on Wednesday afternoon and is coming off a rough outing against the New York Mets, surrendering three earned runs while scattering eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts over three innings pitched for a no-decision. Wainright has an ERA of 4.74 and his 4.28 xFIP suggests maybe Wainright has been a bit unlucky thus far this season. Wainright is striking out nine, walking 4.26 and allowing just under one bomb per nine innings pitched. The Brewers have had moderate success against Wainright over their career, hitting four bombs with 40 strikeouts and slashing .265/.305/.404/.709 over 166 at bats against Wainright.

St Louis is ranked second in baseball against right-handed pitching with a .218 ISO, wOBA of .366 with a 129 wRC+ and a 22 percent strikeout rate against righties this season.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

This is a getaway day for Milwaukee and it’s off to New York and you can bet that the Brewers would like to get to NYC as early as possible to visit the museums and other wares the city has to offer. At this stage of their careers, Wainright is the better pitcher than Chacin and the Cardinals will probably be fighting to get to the bat rack against Chacin. Milwaukee has heavy lumber but I think Wainright can keep the ball down enough to keep the ball in the yard on Wednesday afternoon. We make “Cash with the Flash” when we play the Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon.

Prediction: Cardinals

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Vegas hasn’t posted a total as of yet but when we add the xFIP of both pitchers together, we come to the total of aat least nine runs so I suspect with the way these two sides hit the ball, there will be some runs scored on Wednesday afternoon. I also saw the following trend that might be helpful for us on Wednesday afternoon;

  • Over is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings.

We make “Cash with the Flash” when we play the over on Wednesday afternoon.

Prediction: Over
