Pirates Get Ripped In Game One
The Pittsburgh Pirates came into this series on Monday night riding a three-game winning streak, but they could not keep it rolling as they lost by a score of 9-3. It was not a good game at all for the Pirates who will enter their game on Tuesday night sitting in 4th place in the National League Central and 4.0 games out of first. Pittsburgh will look to get back on track on Tuesday & Wednesday and stay within striking distance of the top spot in the division. Pittsburgh had a 2-0 lead on Arizona in the first, but the Diamondbacks scored two in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the 2nd and never looked back. Nick Kingham had a horrible outing as he allowed seven ERs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings of work to fall to 1-1 with a 7.84 ERA on the year. The Pirates had 13 hits but all they could muster was the three runs. Josh Bell had two of them two push his hitting streak to 13 games in a row. He is hitting .415 with four homers and 17 RBIs over that stretch.

Toeing the slab for the Pirates will be Chris Archer and he has gone 1-2 with a 4.33 ERA in five starts on the year, including 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts on the road. In his career, he has gone 34-38 with a 4.13 ERA in 100 games (98 starts) on the road and 8-9 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts during the month of May, plus 19-23 with a 3.50 ERA in 73 games (71 starts) in the daytime. Archer has gone 1-0 with a 4.70 ERA in two career starts against the D-Backs, with both starts coming here at Chase Field.
Pittsburgh has been poor on offense so far as they come in ranked 26th in the league in scoring, putting up 3.71 rpg, while also ranking 20th in hitting at .240 and 29th in homers with 32. On the mound, they have been above average as they rank 13th in the league in ERA at 4.26, while also ranking 15th in WHIP at 1.30 and 25th in K’s with 335. The pen for the Bucs ranks 21st in the league with a 4.56 ERA.
Escobar Leads D-Backs In Game-One Rout
The Arizona Diamondbacks have surprised some with their start this year and they will look to keep it going in this series. The D-Backs did enter this series having lost three games in a row, but they were able to end that slide with the 9-3 win on Monday night. The D-Backs will now enter their game on Tuesday night sitting in 2nd place in the National League West and just 3.5 games out of first. Arizona had averaged just 2.57 rpg over their previous seven games, but they exploded on Nick Kingham and company for nine runs in the win. Leading their attack was Eduardo Escobar, who had three hits, including his 8th dinger of the year while driving in three runs. Christian Walker also launched his 8th homer of the year in the contest. Grabbing the win was Robbie Ray, who allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out six in 5.0 innings of work. he is now at 3-1 with a 3.14 ERA on the year.

The Diamondbacks will trot out Zack Greinke and he has gone 5-1 with a 3.16 ERA in nine starts on the year, including 2-0 with a 2.22 ERA in four starts at home. In his career, he has gone 33-12 with a 3.12 ERA in 62 career starts here at Chase Field and 28-22 with a 3.53 ERA in 79 games (70 starts) during the month of May, plus 58-36 with a 3.50 ERA in 137 games (127 starts) in the daytime. Greinke has gone 9-4 with a 4.17 ERA in 14 career starts against the Pirates.
The Diamondbacks have been solid on offense so far as they come in ranked 10th in the league in scoring, putting up 5.10 rpg, while also ranking 3rd in hitting at .261 and 6th in homers with 60. On the mound, they have been above average as they rank 12th in the league in ERA at 4.25, while also ranking 16th in WHIP at 1.31 and 7th in K’s with 381. Their pen ranks 22nd in ERA at 4.67.
- 13-3 in their last 16 vs. a team with a winning record
- 5-0 in Greinke’s last 5 starts vs. a team with a winning record
- 20-44 in their last 64 vs. National League West
- 1-5 in Archer’s last 6 starts vs. a team with a winning record
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
It’s so hard to go against Zack Greinke at home. He is not perfect, but in his career, he has has been a dominant pitcher in his home games. Greinke is 110-45 with a 3.05 ERA in his home games in his career overall, while here at Chase Field he has gone 33-12 with a 3.20 ERA in 62 starts. This year he has gone 2-0 with a 2.22 ERA at home, compared to going 3-1 with a 4.08 ERA on the road. Chris Archer is 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts on the road this year and the Pirates are just 1-6 in his last seven road starts overall, plus we note that the Pirates are just 3-13 the last 16 games of this series. Take Arizona in this one.
Prediction: Arizona -147
Full-Game Total Pick
I will look for this one to go over the total. The D-Backs hung up nine runs in game one of this series and will face Chris Archer, who has a 5.73 ERA on the road. Archer has not looked good this year and the Arizona offense will take advantage. The Pittsburg offense has struggled this year and Zack Greinke has been solid at home in his career, but he also has a 4.17 ERA in his career against the Buccos. The Over is 9-2 in Pirates last 11 on grass and 4-1 in Diamondbacks last 5 during game 3 of a series, plus 5-0 the last five meetings between these teams here in Arizona.
Prediction: Over 7.5
