Oakland Athletics at Boston Red Sox

Wednesday, May 16th, 2018, Fenway Park

SP: Cahill (OAK) vs. Sale (BOS)

The Oakland Athletics will wrap up their series with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night at Fenway Park. It will be the final time they play this season. First pitch is set for 7:10 P.M ET and can be seen nationally by MLB.tv subscribers.

Oakland Playing Decent Ball

Not many people would have predicted the Oakland A’s to be around .500, yet, through almost two months the franchise sits at 20-21. They are only five games back in the AL West and have some very good young talent. Most recently, the team has lost five of their last seven games.

While their pitching staff has been serviceable, their offense has been their calling card — especially in terms of power hitting. The unit currently ranks No. 9 in slugging percentage and No. 11 in overall runs scored. Khris Davis leads the charge with a team-high 12 home runs and 36 runs batted in while Jed Lowrie has a team-high .333 batting average.

The team will send Trevor Cahill, now in his second stint with Oakland, to the hill to face Boston. Cahill (1-1, 2.25) has been very effective in his four starts this year.

Boston Solid As Usual

As usual, the Boston Red Sox are one of the best teams in the entire league. They currently stand at 28-13 and sit just a half-game back of the first-place Yankees. Most recently, they’ve won two of their last three contests.

The offense for Boston has been outstanding. They currently rank No. 1 in slugging percentage and No. 2 in batting average and overall runs scored. On the pitching side, they have the fourth-most quality starts, the fifth-best WHIP, and the ninth-best ERA.

On Wednesday, the team will send their ace, Chris Sale, to the hill to face Cahill. Sale has been amazing this season. He leads the team with a 2.17 ERA and with 78 strikeouts. This will be his 10th start of the season.

Trends:

OAK:

  • 18-44 in the last 62 meetings in Boston.

BOS:

  • 12-3 in their last 15 Wed. games.
  • 28-12 in their last 40 overall.

Betting-wise, it’s simple: you cannot bet against Chris Sale. Plus, he will be throwing on the mound at Fenway Park in front of the best fans around. Oakland doesn’t have much of a shot.
