Texas Rangers vs Kansas City Royals

Where: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City Missouri

When: Thursday, May 16, 2019, 1:15 pm Eastern

We have an American League Major League Baseball game to discuss for Thursday afternoon when the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals meet under partly cloudy skies and first-pitch temps in the upper 80’s for game three of their three-game series. This review is being written prior to the start of game two being played on Wednesday evening and all stats and opinions are made without the knowledge of Wednesday night’s outcome.

Texas is in fourth place in the American League West and plans on righty Lance Lynn to do the pitching for the Rangers. Kansas City is in the last place in the American League Central and will look to righty Homer Bailey to hopefully shut down the potent Rangers lineup. I’m the Flash and will be discussing this game with you today.

Rangers Suffer Game One Blowout

Shelby Miller lasted just 1.2 innings but made his mark on the game by allowing eight earned runs on seven hits with just one strikeout as the Rangers dropped game one of their three-game series by a score of 11-5. Joey Gallo had a pair of hits with two RBI and Logan Forsythe had three hits and a pair of RBI to lead the Rangers in a losing cause on Tuesday night.

Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus left Tuesday night’s game with hamstring tightness and is listed as day-to-day for Wednesday night’s game with the Royals. Andrus is the only significant injury on the Rangers report for Wednesday night.

Lynn (4-3, 5.48 ERA) is coming off a rough outing with the Houston Astros, allowing three earned runs over seven innings pitched for his third loss of the season. Lynn scattered six hits with three solo home runs, one walk and eight strikeouts for his third loss of the season.

Lynn has a 5.48 ERA but his 4.53 xFIP suggests some positive regression might be headed the veteran righties way this season. Lynn is striking out 8.31 per nine innings pitched and that might be helpful against a Kansas City side with a 22 percent strikeout rate against right-handers and the 1.13 bombs allowed by Lynn per nine innings might be problematic against a Royals club with a .193 ISO against right-handed pitching this season.

Royals Score 11 Runs in Game One Opening Win over Texas

Kansas City broke out the lumber Tuesday night, scoring eight runs in the first two innings before hanging on for an 11-5 victory in game one of their three-game series. Whit Merrifield and Hunter Dozier each had three hits and a combined four RBI to lead the Royals to their tenth home win of the season against 13 defeats.

The Royals aren’t reporting any significant injuries for their Wednesday night game with the Rangers.

Bailey (4-3, 4.83 ERA) is coming off a solid, five-inning victory at home over the Philadelphia Phillies, scattering four hits and just one earned run for his second consecutive victory and fourth of the season. Bailey walked three and struck out four in the 5-1 win over the Phillies.

Bailey has a 4.83 ERA but his 4.01 xFIP suggests he might be the victim of some bad luck this season.  Bailey is striking out 8.34 batters per nine innings pitched and that might be beneficial for him against a Rangers club with a 25 percent strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. Bailey has been prone to the long ball over his career but is allowing less than one home run per nine innings pitched this season and that is a good thing as the Rangers mash righties with power and boast an ISO of .202 this season.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet

It’s a getaway day and Texas has been gone for ten days and would probably like to go home and forget about their 1-6 record on this road trip and I think Kansas City behind a resurgent Homer Bailey, should be able to win another game at Kauffman Stadium. Lynn is a battler but it looks like the Royals offense is beginning to get their act together. We Cash with the Flash when we play the Royals to defeat the Texas Rangers on Thursday afternoon.

Prediction: Royals

Full-Game Total Pick

I don’t have any idea what the total would be but I suspect it will be around 8.5 to 9.5 runs and I see these two sides exceeding that total on Thursday afternoon. The starting pitchers are known to allow runs and both bullpens are bottom 10 in baseball with xFIP’s exceeding 4.52 and that usually means runs. We Cash with the Flash when we play the over on Thursday afternoon.

Prediction: Over
